Interviews:2008

Here is the complete listing and linkage for all of my 2008 interviews.

I interviewed Rick Monday right outside the Dodgers' clubhouse at Dodger Stadium in June of 2008. We talked mostly about when he saved the U.S. flag from being burned. I wrote a piece about that for Global Traveler magazine's website. That GT piece was read by David Stein on Sporting News Radio. To hear the Rick Monday interview click hereTo hear David Stein read my piece click here

For another piece on GT's website, I intervi
ewed wrestling personalities Al Snow, Terri Runnels and Scott Taylor separately at Wizard World in Rosemont, IL in August of 2008. We talked about travel, their current life and their future plans. To hear the Al Snow interview click hereTo hear the Terri Runnels interview click hereTo hear the Scott Taylor interview click here

I interviewed Mike Easler and Larry Bowa together during batting practice at Dodger Stadium in June of 2008. Easler talked about his favorite city, while Bowa wasn't quite as decisive about his. I also helped Bowa with fielding practice, although that is not part of the interview. To hear the Easler and Bowa interview click here

I interviewed Hall of Fame broadcaster Peter Gammons of ESPN on the field at Dodger Stadium in June of 2008. It was long before the game started and there were only a handful of people even there. We discussed his favorite cities. To hear the Peter Gammons interview click here

The last interview I got at Dodger Stadium in June of 2008 was with Ryan Dempster. Dempster had an unbelievable season after converting back to a starting pitcher after being a reliever for several years. Dempster was very loose and seemed happy to talk for a bit.

I interviewed ESPN broadcaster Jon Miller at Dodger Stadium in June of 2008. Miller gave me over 3 minutes of his time, which is quite a lot for an unscheduled interview. He talked freely about a number of his favorite cities. To hear the Jon Miller interview click here

I interviewed Hall of Famer Joe Morgan right as he headed into the dugout moments before the game at Dodger Stadium in June of 2008. Morgan only had about 30 seconds, but I logged in another Hall of Famer! To hear the Joe Morgan interview click here

Doing some research for another GT website piece, I attended a couple of TNA wrestling events in the Chicago area. At the fanfest, i was able to interview Christy Hemme, Lance Rock and Jimmy Rave (collectively known as the Rock N Roll Infection). We talked about travel and the expansion of TNA.To hear the Christy Hemme, Rock and Rave interview click here

At the Walk for Hope 2008, in Glenview, IL, I interviewed actress Andrea Evans for a GT online piece. Evans discussed her return to tv's One Life to Live, her commitment to Walk for Hope, her partnership with Lather and her future plans. To hear the Andrea Evans interview click here

Cityrag on Celebrity Plastic Surgery 2008

Cityrag.com has a photo collage of celebrity plastic surgery in 2008. Many of these photos have been shown on this very blog, but a few of them are new to me. Which is the scariest? I would have to give my vote to Carrot Top. Click here for the site.

Watch Out Corey Haim

I just saw the first advertisement for the HorrorHound Weekend Convention in Indianapolis on March 27-29, 2009. Corey Haim is one of the guest celebrities. I haven't seen Haim since 'the incident'.The incident to which I refer happened in the late 1990's at a Hollywood Collectors Show in Rosemont (IL). I don't remember the specific details, but for whatever reason, I stayed at the show longer than anticipated and I was running late.
I raced through the crowd (as politely as I could) and reached the ballroom entrance. Once outside of the ballroom, I picked up the pace just a bit, since there were fewer people.
All of a sudden, Haim appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. I had no time to stop, slow down or even change direction. The first thud I heard was my left shoulder connecting with Haim's left shoulder/chest area. The second sound I heard was sort of an "ooooommmffff", which is what Haim sputtered as he fell backward. I apologized and helped him up. To his credit, he laughed it off, but I could tell it took a bit out of him. We shook hands and I promised to stay away from him.
I think the Statute of Limitations on that promise has expired. So look out, Haim, I'll see you in March.

Blue Year 2008

Okay, so it wasn’t really a “bad” year, just difficult in the last month or so. But I’m glad it’s almost over anyways – time for a fresh start!

For some reason, New Year’s just screams out “blue” to me. So this year, I snapped up this China Glaze “Blue Island Iced Tea” for the base (2 coats), and I’m completely in love with it, and all the little silver sparkles infused in the polish. It's slightly lighter than the picture shows - I had to use a flash for both pictures to get the "bling" though. My tips are two coats of CG “Tinsel”, another new favorite, and appropriately “bling-y” for ringing in 2009, I think. I swiped a light coat on the undersides of my nails as well, just for a little “extra” (keeps the tips nice longer too). A few little shiny silver stars that really pick up light from all the way across a room, and I’m ready for New Year’s Eve.

Base and top coat are Zoya, as usual.

A quick tip to end the year with: I was having problems getting the clay cane images off my nails without them taking part of my natural nail with them. Most annoying. But when I went to remove them this week, I simply swiped over each nail just a couple of times, enough to remove the top coat, but not the polish underneath. Then I took my metal cuticle pusher, and gently pried off the cane disks with the pointy end before removing the polish. I think what must have happened earlier was that the canes sunk onto my nail bed too far when I was removing the polish (softening w/remover) around them, and ended up sealing to the tissue. Needless to say, taking the canes off before the rest of the nail polish left me with intact nails once again. Much better.

To nail fanatics everywhere (and everyone else too): Best wishes for a healthy and happy new year, filled with bright colors and many sparkly nail jewels!

RIP:Jean Blais

This past Saturday, Jean Blais left this world. Mrs. B. (mother of Dave Blais) was truly full of life and love.
She was my sister Nancy's mother-in-law, but I think she looked at Nancy as more of a daughter (and Nancy looked at her as a second mom). The mutual love and affection was so evident every time they were together.
After a 2 year battle, she passed away too young. I'd say there will be a little less spirit in our lives, but her spirit will live on. You could not have known her and not felt her spirit. Mrs. B. freely also welcomed me into her life. She knew no separation...everyone was just family and she loved us all.
We love you, too, Jean.

Rug hooked doll

As i type this, my internet could turn off at any minute. I have been having trouble with my phones lines for many days now. I can check in to the internet but only sporatically. ugh! Qwest is supposed to come and fix my lines by the end of the week. (I hope).
I finished my new rug hooked doll. She is quite large, 16" x 8" by 6" wide.

Friendly Encounters

This is another in a series of meetings of my friends and celebs.

I have only recently met Erin Galligan, but my sister's family has known the Galligan family for quite a while. My nephew Matt (Big Money) and Erin are now dating (and I think they make a nice couple). Erin and her whole family are big White Sox fans.
Erin's uncle Marty and aunt Cathy won a silent auction and received tickets to a game and the opportunity to meet the players during batting practice. For real fans, it doesn't get much better!
This was in 2004, which was Ozzie Guillen's first year of managing the team. Little did anyone know that the next season Guillen would win AL Manager of the Year for leading the Sox to the 2005 championship!
By the way, in keeping with the tradition of 2 of my favorite bloggers (White Sox Cards and 78 Topps Cards), Don Cooper (pitching coach) is one of the 2 people in the background.

Happy Birthday to Lanny Poffo

Today is a special day. It is the birthday of a true gentleman, Lanny Poffo. Poffo, the son of Angelo Poffo and the younger brother of Randy Savage, grew up in Downers Grove (IL). Poffo was a star athlete before he entered pro wrestling. He started in the NWA territories, but enjoyed real success in International Championship Wrestling (ICW).
In 1985, Poffo and Savage joined the WWF (now WWE), soon after
the ICW folded. In the WWF, Poffo was known as Leaping Lanny Poffo, the Poet Laureate. He read poems (that he wrote) about his opponents before matches. Poffo was quite a high-flyer, being one of the first wrestlers in the U.S. to use the moonsault. After a few years, he took on the persona of 'the Genius', a cap and gown-wearing bad guy.
Poffo has released 2 books of poems. The first, 'Wrestling with Rhyme', is a collection of the poems he wrote about his fellow WWF wrestlers. The second, 'Limericks from the Heart (and Lungs!)', is filled with 335 anti-smoking limericks, all very amusing! Both books can be enjoyed by all ages.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Poffo a little bit, when he agreed to appear in Lerner Newspapers' Newspaper In Education ad series. Poffo graciously allowed me to interview him for a companion article. Poffo's ad was highly praised by our readers (more about that in a future post). I had the pleasure of meeting Poffo at a Wrestling Reunion. We talked at length and I walked away even more impressed. Poffo is so genuinely nice.
I have briefly summarized Poffo's career, but he is not simply defined by his wrestling career. He is an author, poet, motivational speaker, counselor, father and more. For me, I am grateful I can call him a friend!
Happy Birthday, Lanny!

Dr. Youn's Top 9 Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2009

Here are #4-#1 of Dr. Youn's Top 9 Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2009.

#4: Nonsurgical Liposuction Techniques Run Rampant... As Do Disappointing Results. One of the hottest procedures today is nonsurgical liposuction. Cosmetic practices throughout the country are advertising fat reduction via injections (mesotherapy and Lipodissolve), external lasers, external ultrasound, and even by freezing the fat (called cryolipolysis). While these techniques sound intriguing, none have actually been proven to safely work...yet. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is currently conducting an FDA-approved study on Lipodissolve, with the initial results due in the near future. While the only proven way to safely and effectively remove fat is via liposuction, 2009 may bring considerable advances to some of these, so far, unproven modalities.

#3: Eyelash Enhancing Medication "Latisse" Hits Big in a Blink. Recently an FDA advisory panel recommended approval for this eyelash stimulating medication from Allergan, the makers of Botox. Peak sales are estimated to reach $500 million, as this treatment will be the only one of its kind. I expect Allergan will see huge profits from this topical medication, as will the physicians that dispense it. And people will walk around with Tammy Faye Baker eyes...

#2: Stem Cells are the Future in the U.S., but the Present in Other Countries. Stem cells are currently all the rage in potentially curing cancers, developmental abnormalities, and other medical problems... but are they the future for plastic surgery as well? Actually, stem cells are currently being used by some pioneering (and some reckless) surgeons outside the U.S. Dr. Vincent Giampapa introduced a stem cell facelift in France back in October and a handful of surgeons are performing breast enhancement with stem cells in Japan and Europe. So will we see stem cells being used by plastic surgeons in the U.S. in 2009? Not likely. The FDA is cautious with allowing procedures like these to be performed here in the States, and with good reason. Scientists need to prove that the use of stem cells for indications like these is safe and effective before allowing patients to undergo it. Until then, Americans will need to travel abroad for these extremely controversial treatments.

And finally we reach...
#1: Botox-Competitor Reloxin will act as an Economic Bailout for Millions of Botox Users in 2009. FDA approval for Medicis's cosmetic botulinum toxin Reloxin is expected sometime in the new year. This may prove to be a relief to patients and plastic surgeons who have been forced to buy Botox at increasing prices each year. I currently charge my patients $650 for Botox injections to three areas, and the price of the Botox product itself accounts for at least half of that charge. Reloxin will be the first legitimate Botox competitor to challenge Allergan's monopoly on this market, and hopefully bring prices down for the most popular cosmetic treatment in the U.S. It can end up being an economic bailout for the millions of people who undergo cosmetic botulinum toxin treatments several times a year.

So there you have it! Dr. Youn's Top 9 Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2009. I'm interested to hear if you think I missed anything! (And don't comment that the plastic surgery market will suffer due to the economy. This is not a prediction, but an expectation...)

Bear Down Sunday #16

The Chicago Bears stand at 9-6 as they face the Houston Texans today. The Bears need a win and a loss by the Vikings to capture the NFC North division title.
Who better to represent this game than my brother-in-law Scott. Scott (and the family) lived in Houston (TX) for several years. He cheered for the Texans during their lean first few years.
They are back in the Chicago area, but Scott still supports the Houston teams, as well as the Chicago teams (except for the Cubs). I have to give him credit though. He was brave enough to wear his Texans jersey as he cheered for his Texans when they were in Indianapolis to face the Colts. The Hoosiers treated him pretty well, although it might have gotten ugly if the Texans had beaten the Colts.
Scott ran into the Geico Gekko in the stadium concourse. He posed for a photo and I jumped in (hey...it was the Geico Gekko!!). Scott will probably deny it, but the speculation is that this was an attempt to land in a post on Johngy's Beat.

Ophelia

Meet Ophelia. She loves the snow, but lately it has been getting to her. She has to walk up a step hill to access her car because the snow is still so thick on her street. She is happy however, that she got to go to the Macy's sale today. She was getting a little bit of cabin fever!

Dr. Youn's Top 9 Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2009

I hope you are enjoying your holiday weekend! I have looked into my crystal ball and compiled my list of Dr. Youn's Top 9 Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2009. Here are #9-#5:

9. Plastic Surgery Vacations will become more and more popular. As the nation undergoes a dire economic recession, greater and greater numbers of people will pack their sunblock, passports, and ice packs as they combine plastic surgery and vacations. Americans will travel to Mexico, Brazil, and even India in an attempt to save money and look better. This trend will unfortunately bring about an unprecedented number of disturbing complications, as people bring their botched results back to the U.S. for American plastic surgeons to treat. The lucky ones will come back looking both rested AND younger.

8. Fat, from both from animals and people, will become a new Green resource. I've already reported on the renegade Beverly Hills radiologist who used liposuction fat to power his SUV to work each day. With the continued push toward "green" energy, scientists and some physicians will continue their work on Biofuels, with liposuction fat on the periphery of this trend. No, I don't plan on ever doing this.

7. Sculptra will gain FDA approval as a liquid facelift for the general population. Sculptra is currently only FDA-approved for treatment of HIV-associated facial wasting. Sculptra has been used in Europe for many years under the name Newfill, and is the only injectable filler that can produce generalized volume replacement in the face without excessive cost. With the realization that facial volume loss is an integral component of the aging process, this treatment may take center stage in the fight against facial gauntness.

6. 2009 will bring with it a plethora of new extreme, bizarre, and unusual plastic surgeries. 2008 brought us such plastic surgery oddities as cosmetic leg lengthening, the G Shot, the Boob Jab, and the Acupuncture Facelift. I expect fringe medical practitioners to do the same in 2009. Can we expect to see actual rib removal to thin the body, removal of the omentum (fat around the intestines) to decrease a protuberant tummy, or tummy tucks performed at the time of C-sections? Time will tell.

5. Will Gummy Bear Implants Boost Busts in 2009? In November 2006 the FDA lifted the ban on silicone gel implants... at least the fourth generation ones. Since then plastic surgeons and patients in the know have been waiting for FDA approval of the form-stable, "gummy bear" breast implants. These are the firm, textured, tear-drop shaped implants that are made to retain their shape and not conform to the shape of surrounding tissues. They are already in widespread use throughout many other countries in the world. Will the FDA approve these implants for general cosmetic use in 2009? Thousands of plastic surgeons and patients hope so.

Tomorrow I will post the rest of Dr. Youn's Top 9 Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2009. Stay tuned! Same bat time... same bat url.

Happy Boxing Day (a day late)

Many parts of the world celebrated Boxing Day yesterday. Boxing Day is also known as a Day of Goodwill. On this day, the wealthier members of society give gifts to those less fortunate. Over time and into different countries and cultures, the concepts sometimes differ, but the general meaning is still very much at the center of the day. To represent Boxing Day, I am highlighting former boxing great, Leon Spinks.
Spinks won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division in the 1976 Olympics and also won the world heavyweight championship title when he beat Muhammad Ali in 1978. Spinks lost that title back to Ali 7 months later. After many years of mixed results, Spinks retired from boxing in 1995.
During a down time for Spinks, Chicago radio legend Jonathon Brandmeier helped him by lining up a few gigs for him, including appearing at some of Brandmeier's live shows. Spinks was a hit with Brandmeier's audience.
Partly because of Brandmeier's efforts, Spinks was brought back into the spotlight. Spinks has since become a regular on the 'meet-and-greet' circuit.
Brandmeier reaching out to and helping Spinks is a story very worthy of Boxing Day.

A Sunny Christmas Compliments of Tammy Sytch

I have met Tammy Sytch (aka Sunny) several times. As I have documented before, Sytch enjoyed great popularity in the 90's, even crossing into the mainstream. She has also overcome some troubling times.
These days, Sytch is busy on the independent wrestling scene as well as at fan conventions. Sytch is still one of the most popular celebrity guests at any convention she attends.
One of the reasons for her popularity is her genuine fan-friendly nature. I once literally almost ran into her after a wrestling event while she was still with the WWE. Sytch was in the parking area talking to fans. While other wrestlers were hurrying to get out and go wherever, Sytch took time to greet many fans. This was during the peak of her popularity, too.
I have criticized celebrities for not being too personable at conventions, but I have never seen Sytch be anything less than completely outgoing with her fans. I have never seen any fan walk away disappointed.

Merry Christmas!

I hope you are all having a nice Christmas. I took a break from plastic surgery and other projects today to spend time with family and watch an excellent movie called Slumdog Millionaire. I highly recommend it.
I wish you all the peace and hope brought by a small baby over two thousand years ago in the town of Bethlehem. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog.
Back in a flash with my plastic surgery predictions for 2009.

God bless,

Merry Christmas

Happy Holidays!

See you next year!

xo,
Celebrity Nation

Quote of the Day

"My father just let my family and I know, amongst others that he had another child after my little sister Aliana, or maybe he had it before Aliana?? Either way, he cheated on my mother and that really sucks," - Lindsay Lohan

Christmas Chaos Courtesy of Mick Foley

I couldn't let Christmas week pass without highlighting a man who absolutely cherishes Christmas. Mick Foley loves Christmas. Foley has even authored a book about his favorite holiday called 'Christmas Chaos'. It is an amusing tale, complete with artwork by Jerry 'the King' Lawler. Together, they make this book fun for everyone.
I first met Foley years ago at a Borders Books in Oak Park, IL. He w
as wearing the Santa hat and was definitely in the holiday mood as the snow started to fall. I didn't have much of a chance to talk with him or even pose with him for a photo, because the line was too long.
Years later at a Wrestling Reunion, I would get to spend actual quality minutes with Foley. That time was highlighted by Laurie and Mick discussing writing (but I will discuss that much more in depth in a future post). Suffice it to say, it was one of the most surreal moments I have witnessed.
Since then, I have met Foley a few times. He is different from the average celebrity at appearances. Foley will talk with you about virtually anything and for longer than the average time it takes to sign a picture.

Santa Canes

Santa Claus is coming - are you ready? I hope he brings me some fun new nail art stuff...

This week's manicure is all about China Glaze and clay canes. I started with CG "Emerald Sparkle", and topped it with a thin coat of CG "Tinsel" for that frosted, sugary look. Then just a coat of top coat to set the cane Santas and candy canes in, and another top coat to finish. Unfortunately, I didn't get the clear clay in the crook of the candy canes pressed down tightly enough, so you can still see them if you look close enough. But I did get them sliced fairly thin - they stick up less than a regular rhinestone does above the polish. I wish I could have gotten the Santas sliced a bit thinner - it's hard to see where to slice on the white cutting board I've been using. Time for a colored board, maybe?

Here's a flash picture - in the right light, these are very sparkle-y nails (though for some reason, the flash makes the clear clay around the Santas stand out more - that doesn't actually happen even in bright light):
I *will* get the hang of cutting the cane slices thinner - it's a resolution for the new year!

Merry Christmas, everyone! Have a safe and happy holiday... and beautiful nails, too!

Santa Snake?

Jake 'the Snake' Roberts has been wrestling professionally for over 30 years. Unfortunately, Roberts has battled personal demons for almost as long.
Despite wrestling for such a long time, Roberts hasn't held that many titles and never any major titles. Still, he has had a great career, contributing much to the industry.
Roberts is generally credited with inventing the DDT finishing move (basically a front face-lock and falling backwards so that the opponent is forced to dive forward onto his head). He is also considered a master of ring psychology (a part of wrestling which many feel is lost today).
One of his biggest contributions was semi-accidental. During one of his stints with the WWE, Roberts was shown as a Bible-preaching good guy. After beating Roberts at a pay-per-view, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin adlibbed, "...Austin 3:16 just whooped your butt." That single catchphrase (Austin 3:16) launched Austin to great heights. The WWE 'Attitude Era' was in high gear and the WWE was riding high again.
As I mentioned earlier, Roberts has battled demons on and off throughout his career. Like many athletes, perhaps this is one reason why he never attained superstardom. Roberts is apparently clean as of this writing. Hopefully he stays that way.
I was fortunate enough to meet Roberts at a Wrestling Reunion. I photographed him with his former tagteam partner and one of his greatest opponents, Ricky 'the Dragon' Steamboat

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Spent today running errands and going to the eye doctor (where I’m told that no, my eyes aren’t going bad – I just need to WEAR MY GLASSES!). Tomorrow will be spent with my daughter doing some shopping and visiting my mother-in-law who is 97 and getting to be quite frail (I’m worried about her). Then it’s Christmas (at my daughter’s) and then New Year’s (I’ll be cooking turkey, etc.) – so this will be my final blog of 2008.

I’m planning on doing some painting, getting myself more organized and doing some research in the rest of these final days of 2008.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
SEE YOU IN THE NEW YEAR!
