Botox safety update

There is some new information on the recent news regarding Botox safety. A consumer group called on "Black Box" labeling of Botox due to alleged deaths related to its use. Apparently one death has been connected to Botox use for cosmetic purposes in 2003.

According to a news release issued by Allergan on January 25, Dr. Sef Kurstjens, Allergan's Chief Medical Officer, responded to allegations that in 2003 a death had occurred in a person who had been injected with Botox® for cosmetic use. A medical review of this actual case showed that the patient died from complications associated with staphylococcus pneumonia, not from the Botox® injection that the patient had received seven weeks earlier. This conclusion is consistent with the treating physician's assessment.

I don't see how it would be physiologically possible for Botox to give someone pneumonia. Could this be an overreaction by a group who is against the use of Botox for cosmetic purposes. Maybe the people in this group have a lot of wrinkles...

Jewelry Art: Bird in Flight torque ~ Fancy version

Some pieces of jewelry are actually miniature sculptures, and can even stand alone. In the past, these were often called "cabinet jewelry", and while it was meant to be a somewhat derogatory term that implied it was hard to wear, I have enjoyed making a few pieces like that in the past. But then once in a while, on the other hand, a truly successful artwork in the medium of jewelry surfaces - one that forms a symbiosis with its wearer. Such a piece is actually not complete until it is WORN. Seen by itself, it just sits there - but once it is put on, it literally comes to life. This necklace, titled "Bird in Flight" is just such a piece!

It is called a "torque" necklace, because it relies on the torque or springiness of the silver neckwire to hold its shape. The silver is hand-hammered on a polished anvil with polished hammers, not only to shape it, but to impart the "memory" of its graceful shape that clings to the nape of the neck. The position that it naturally comes to rest is actually on the SHOULDERS, not the back of the neck! Thus, its wearer is allowed total freedom of movement without feeling any sort of binding on the neck.

This position results in something remarkable happening that makes it an incredibly flattering piece to wear: First, it exposes the beautiful curve at the base of the neck, where the neck swoops into the shoulders (one of the most beautiful lines on a woman's body).... and, secondly, because the necklace is open on the front, there are no horizontal lines across the front of her throat, so the full sweep of the neck is visible in the front! Perhaps my most flattering piece when worn. The neat thing, though, is that the neckwire is wide enough so that it can be worn on a turtleneck, too.

Although the overall design remains the same, each one is handmade in different combinations of amethysts, freshwater pearls and decorative accents that makes it unique. Yours will be different in details than the one pictured here, but the overall "look" will be the same.

The "wing" surface is cast from a torch-textured silver piece (in a process called "reticulation"), that emphasizes a rich, furrowed texture that contrasts nicely with the polished silver framework. This textured surface is patinated by a process that involves careful application of a chemical oxidizer that colors the metal dark grey, and then selectively removing it on the high spots so the bright silver shows through.

This piece currently goes for $1600 in the fancy version shown here, with amethyst and freshwater pearls...but I also make it as a plain silver version (here, and photo above). Check out the earrings I designed to go with it (also to be posted soon!)

Angelina Jolie's loose, flowing Hermes gown piqued curiosity and media speculation at the SAG Awards. And now OK! has confirmed through a source close to Angelina Jolie that she is expecting. "Angie has wanted a second biological baby for some time now ... And the minute she's pregnant, she was glows. She's the type that doesn't want to scream it to everyone but has the quiet, expectant mother glow. Her smile says she's the luckiest woman in the world."

Reports have circulated that Angelina intends on selling the story of her pregnancy to a tabloid magazine, and giving the money to charity.

Britney Hospitalized Again

Britney Spears was placed under psychiatric hold earlier this month ...

Britney Spears was hospitalized again early this morning and is currently under psychiatric hold. A source told People magazine that she was escorted by police. Spears was brought to UCLA Medical Center for a 72-hour lock-down and evaluation. Pal Sam Lufti told People "She went willingly. It was like something in her heart was telling her she should go. She knew something was wrong."

A source says that Britney was hospitalized because she was "driving around her neighboorhood like a mad-woman ... Britney has been prescribed medication which she retuses to take." Reports that Spears attempted suicide have been rebuffed by Lutfi and friend Alli Sims.

Chrissie Hynde Protests Horse-Drawn Carriages in NY

Chrissie Hynde is fronting a protest on today against the famous horse-drawn carriages in Central Park, New York. The Pretenders singer married her now ex-husband, rocker Jim Kerr, in one of the carriages in 1984 - but since joining forces with animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Hynde claims to have discovered how cruelly the horses are treated. She says, "Learning about how horses have died in accidents and seeing their pathetic stalls have caused me to change my tune about the carriage horses." New York's Horse + Carriage Association recently hit out at pop star Pink's role in the same PETA campaign, dismissing claims horses are mistreated. Spokesperson Carolyn Daly tells the New York Daily News, "They have specialised shoes for concrete. We haven't had one animal cruelty violation from the three agencies that oversee us."

Eddie Murphy's Side of the Baby Mama Drama (Sort Of)

Eddie Murphy has never spoken publicly about the drama involving Melanie Brown and the baby, Angel, except when he first said the baby wasn't his. Now someone, of course a nameless source, who says they know the real deal, has sounded off with "Eddie's side" of things.

An acquaintance of Eddie Murphy has volunteered some info on WHY Eddie appeared to treat Melanie Brown, the mother of his child Angel, so badly. According to the source, Eddie and Melanie never lived together and in fact, only slept together three times. She assured Eddie that she had a coil implanted for contraception. That's why, when Mel told Eddie she was pregnant, he couldn't believe he was the father. Eddie had already decided that Melanie wasn't up to his standards quality-wise. On one of their first dates she hinted that she'd like to have a three-way. And she was a bit loud and flashy at times. Supposedly, their relationship was already over when Melanie told Eddie she was pregnant. When he reacted badly she offered him a deal: she'd leave him alone if he'd give her nine million dollars, a Malibu house, and living expenses for 18 years. Eddie feels like he was conned and never wants to lay eyes on her again so he won't be visiting their daughter Angel. Eddie figures that when Angel gets older she might try to contact HIM.

ET to Air Ledger Drug Video Tonight

Entertainment Tonight is catching a whole lot of flack for their decision to air a video of a drug-addled Heath Ledger from two years ago, discussing his lifelong drug useage and the effects on his life with baby-mama Michelle Williams.

The video, shot after the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 29, 2006, shows Ledger talking at a private party at the same hotel where comic actor John Belushi died of an overdose.

"I'm going to get serious s--t from my girlfriend," Ledger tells his companions. "We just had a baby three months ago.

Ledger's companion, actress Michelle Williams, and baby daughter, Matilda, were said to be upstairs in their bungalow while he partied.

"I shouldn't be here at all," he tells the guests, and then offers the admission: "I used to smoke five joints a day for 20 years."

Ledger was found dead Jan. 22 in his SoHo apartment at age 28. The cause of death has not been released, pending toxicology reports. Six different prescription drugs were found in the home.

The harrowing video was shot after Ledger attended the SAG Awards. He had been nominated in the Leading Role category for his performance as a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," but lost out to Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote."

The hotel mentioned is the Chateau Marmont. The video segment was first obtained by Australia's Channel 9, who will also air it, despite uproar from Hollywood.

Update: ET issued this statement on the website:
"Out of respect for Heath Ledger’s family, “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider” have decided not to run the Heath Ledger video which has been circulating in the world media."

Britney Back in the Looney Tunes Ward

It's a big day in the wreckalicous world that is Britney Spears. Last night she was carted away, yet again, for that pesky 5150 mental hold, where it's determined that you pose a danger to yourself and/or others. The difference this time, is that she was cooperative and lucid, as far as lucid goes for Brit.

Here's how it all went down:

Last night, Britney's new psychiatrist went to her home and felt she was a danger to herself and others -- partly because of her reckless driving and partly because of her "downhill behavior." As a result, the shrink launched a plan (days in the making) to have Britney committed to UCLA Medical Center by calling the cops.

Sources tell us the cops knew it was coming. In fact, the plan was for cops and paramedics to take Britney away the night before, but it was scrubbed. Last night, it all went down according to plan. Cops even used code to minimize craziness in transporting Britney to the hospital. Over the police radio, she was referred to as "The Package."

Before the cops arrived, the shrink told her she was going back to the hospital and she offered no resistance. She said, "Is something wrong?" She made hot chocolate and waited. Her mom, Lynne, got extremely agitated, accusing Sam of engineering the impending commitment. We're told Brit told her to "shut the hell up." She demanded silence, sat on the floor and wrote notes to people who were there as they waited. When emergency personnel arrived, Brit went on the gurney without resistance.

When everyone arrived at UCLA, things got heated. Jamie Spears began screaming at Sam Lutfi, accusing him of trying to control Britney. We're told as far as the doctors are concerned -- at least for now -- Lynne and Jamie Spears are not calling the shots. The point guy for the docs is Brit's friend, Sam Lutfi.

Sources say after Britney's commitment earlier this month, she was extremely upset at her dad for getting angry at Sam and the hospital staff. Britney had lawyers draft several documents, however, we're told she did not sign a durable power of attorney giving Lutfi the power to make medical decisions on her behalf. Nevertheless, something was signed and doctors are going to Lutfi for guidance. Jamie went off on Lutfi in the hallway, accusing him of trying to control his daughter.

Britney has been calm in the hospital, even getting a "cigarette break."

We're told during the initial 72-hour stay she cannot be forced to take medication against her will. If, however, she refuses to take the meds, the plan is for the psychiatrist to go to court and have Britney held for an additional 14 days, during which time he could administer proper medications.

As TMZ first reported, Britney has already been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and has sporadically taken her medication. But one source says the meds just aren't doing the trick.

Whew! Sounds like just another day in the life, if you ask me.

Heath's "Secret Struggles" Revealed in US Weekly

The new US Weekly's cover story features quotes from a "close" source/pal/confidant close to Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. According to the article, Williams was heartbroken throughout their three year relationship by her boyfriend's abuse of alcohol and drugs, including heroine, cocaine, and unidentified pills.

The article also claims that Williams took Ledger to Promises Treatment Center in California in early 2006, but that he refused to enter, and swore he would change and clean up his act.

Two separate sources also told US Weekly that after their split, Williams insisted that Ledger be drug-tested before his visitations with their 2-year-old daughter Matilda.

Gwen Stefani Preggers...Angelina More Than Likely Too

I am so tired of stars and their denials and lies about what is going on in their lives, though I get that they want to keep some things private. It would be hard to have every little iota of your life on display for the world to gobble up and spit back out, but COME ON! We all knew you were pregnant, Gwen and Angelina, so you denying and confirming is just so....passe.

Congrats, but cut the s**t next time.

Word is, Angelina hasn't officially confirmed the pregnancy quite yet, ans considering selling the confirmation to the highest bidder, with the proceeds going to charity.

Jake Gyllenhaal is having a very difficult time dealing with the death of his colleague and best-friend Heath Ledger. Gyllenhaal and Ledger became close pals on the set of their film Brokeback Mountain. Gyllenhaal is also godfather to Ledger's 2-year-old daughter with Michelle Williams, Matilda.

Gyllenhaal has taken time off from the set of his movie Brothers. A source on set says, "He [Gyllenhaal] was there, but he wasn't with us. It was obviously a major trauma ... These guys were very close."

"Matthew happens to be one of the most loving people I know and his family is important to him."

One Last Look at Sundance

As Sundance wrapped up yesterday, and the celebs began to vacate Park City, here are a few pictures to remember the film festival of '08.


Paris Hilton jams on the drums at the Velvet Relvolver convert, where she played host for the evening at the 944 magazine party at TAO Park City. Hilton also thanked everyone for coming while her hit single, "Stars are Blind" was played by DJ Vice.


Paris was also seen at the Turning Leaf Lounge where a private dinner was held for her, where she invited friends to join her to discuss her new movie, The Hottie and the Nottie. Describing it as a "cute love story," the movie was not at the festival.


Also in attendance was actress and singer Taryn Manning and DJ and record producer Steve Aoki. All the guests enjoyed Turning Leaf wine during the party.


Showing up once again at Sundance, Paris and Nicky Hilton joined together and enjoyed the MySpace Nights at TAO party. With two nights of invite-only concerts, Maroon 5 and 50 Cent both performed, as well as DJ Samantha Ronson who provided music.


Cute couple Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian enjoyed the events at Sundance as they attended the MySpace Nights at TAO party. Newly pregnant Jessica Alba and fiance Cash Warren were another couple also in attendance as they cuddled and enjoyed the performance by 50 Cent.

Bows & Teardrops

I decided to try entering an ongoing nail art contest at http://www.trendyprincess.com/, and see if I could win some nail art supplies. I came up with this simple little design using rhinestones I bought from that site, since they want pictures of artwork using their products. My manicure obviously isn’t perfect by any means, so I’m not sure if I’ll even be in the running, but we’ll see. It was fun to play around with, anyways, and the contest is a monthly one, so I can enter again later if I want. I think it looks elegant, though I’m not sure how the bows are going to hold up, since my nails are naturally quite rounded, and the edges of the bows are not adhered to the polish surface. Surprisingly, they haven't gotten snagged on things like I was sure they would - even doing the dishes, laundry and such. I did put a nice thick layer of top coat over them though, and while it etched the big bows somewhat, it left the teardrops sparkly.

What I used:

1 coat OPI top coat to set design
Qtica Half-Time drops (they’re magical, I tell ya!)

I think I’m getting better at taking pictures (not "good" just yet, but better). I think I just need to stop trying to take them at night, and take them in natural daylight instead. I’ll do that next time, and see how it turns out.

I have some time this coming weekend for trying out the Nail Art Diva machine again - this time, I'll let my nails dry completely before messing with it, and see if I can't do some nice stamped art for next week. Cross your fingers!
