What to Go See This Weekend at the Movies

This weekend brings one must-see movie, Funny People. The latest flick from Judd Apatow (The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up) takes a turn for the darker and dramatic. Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Leslie Mann star in the bittersweet dramedy about a famous comedian who is diagnosed with cancer. He's forced to reevaluate his world. He becomes the mentor to a young, amateur comedian, and, in turn, learns a lot about life.

NEW NEW NEW

Recovery time!

The month is coming to an end finally! I got one looming deadline for the 1-2nd left. No problem though :D! I'm finally feeling good! Can't wait to go for a long hike,  just slow down and take in the fresh air...

I'm pumped too, now I know I can handle the worst case freelancer scenario haha.

Anyways, heres some sketch I did tonight just to relax and do whatever.

And this is how I feel:

You thought we'd lost it all,

You thought we'd given up the fight!

Well now we're back to prove you wrong,

It's time to open up your eyes, Hell Yeah!

Venom is awesome :D

THE Catwoman:Julie Newmar

When I met Julie Newmar, I remember thinking, "Cool...I just met Catwoman! THE Catwoman!" Sometimes I am still that little kid with stars in my eyes.
Besides tv's Batman, I really didn't follow much of Newmar's career, but her role as Catwoman was enough for me. I loved that show. I loved all of the celebrity super villains.
Newmar portrayed Catwoman 12 times (Eartha Kitt played the role once and Lee Meriwether took over the role for the 1966 film). I also believe that Newmar's Catwoman was the best and most challenging to Batman.
Newmar played Catwoman as vulnerable and misunderstood and compared herself to Batman. I really think that bejangled the Caped Crusader more than her crime capers. There was a great dynamic going on there. I am a bit surprised Newmar never had a spin-off show.
I told her that she had a big impact on Laurie. She smiled and said something like, "That's sweet." Maybe she just thought I was trying to be nice. However, she (as the Catwoman) probably had an impact on a lot of smart, young women. I don't think she was as powerful as Mary Tyler Moore, but that's another story.

Sculptra is FDA-approved for cosmetic use

I've been waiting for this for a couple years. The FDA has finally approved Sculptra for the correction of facial wrinkles. It will now go by the name Sculptra Aesthetic. Sculptra is the best injectable filler (poly-L-lactic acid) to return volume to the face. It has been approved for treatment of HIV-related facial wasting since 2004, but many plastic surgeons have used it off-label for general cosmetic use.

I have been using Sculptra for a couple years now, and have been very happy with the results. Second to fat grafting, I think it is the best way to add 3-dimensional volume to the face. Usually a minimum of three treatments is necessary, each approximately 6-8 weeks apart. The only drawback is the rate of granuloma (small inflammatory nodule) formation, which is definitely higher than other traditional fillers like Restylane and Juvederm, but still remains acceptably low if properly performed. I've been using it more and more, especially in the past several months. I think this product will be a hit.

Where in the World is Johngy?

Today, I am giving you a Johngy's eye view of my day. Where am I and what am I doing? That will be revealed bit by bit.
I am walking down a long, empty walkway. This is so generic, it could be anywhere. Oh look, there is a light at the end of the tunnel (sorry).
It looks a bit brighter and perhaps it is opening up on the far right. Is there any hint of where I am yet?Hmm it got dark again, but those 2 men in the middle might be the first real clue.
It's still a bit dark as I stand in the doorway, ready to reach my destination.
There is one of my appointments. This is Mr. Brad Ausmus. He plays baseball professionally for a team called the Los Angeles Dodgers. I'll be talking to him shortly, when he is done with his practicing.
A few weeks ago, I was at Miller Park in Milwaukee to cover the game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. I thought it would be fun to show the basic path I take to meet these ballplayers.

CheezCake Nails

I really, really, really wanted to make those nails look like a CheeseCake, but you see how it came up. Only now, looking at those pictures i understand what was my fundamental mistake - i think i made too many marbles. Anyway ,at least a big finger looks the way it supposed to :)
May be i ll remake this mani one day. I used to be good at making marbles, but i guess i just forgot, last 20 marbles i made were a total mess. May be i need more practice .

More fun With Zoya Pinta

Here is another design that i made using Zoya Pinta. This color is so lovely. For stamping i used Essy "Punchi Pink", and the gold tip is made using Zoya "Penny" from Truth Collection.

Zoya "Demi" + Zoya "Isla"

Some Zoya swatches. Those colors are just gorgeous, did not even wanted to add any design.

Checking Out The Phillies Room

I always marvel at the work of photoshopped creations of nonexistent baseball cards. Recently, I came across The Phillies Room, run by Jim, which features sets of Phillies cards he has created called Chachi Sets.
I will use Jim's words from his site to explain Chachi cards.
For the past several years, I have created my own Phillies cards. The major card companies no longer produce cards for players like Eric Bruntlett or Clay Condrey, so I took matters into my own hands.
I call my cards "Chachi" in honor of my dog Chachi. Just like you should never call Fleer cards "Fleers", you should never call Chachi cards "Chachis".
The Chachi cards start with the 2005 set. Each contains 60-80 cards. For the 2009 set, there are 50+ cards and counting, including some All-Star specials, 2009 Season Highlights and special inserts. There is not a bad card in the bunch. They are better than any company would have produced.
With Jim's permission, I have selected a handful of cards to show here. Eric Bruntlett is for my nephew Matt, who followed him from his Houston days. Victorino is the favorite of Kim Krol (of Global Traveler), who is a huge Phillies fan. Jayson Werth is probably my favorite Phillie.
I probably should consider myself lucky that I do not possess the talent to make such cards. Otherwise, I might be spending day after day making Johngy cards!

Coming home

Someone mentioned to me how nice it would be to take our home with us wherever we want to go. I think that's a great idea! I'm a homebody (most of the time) but would love to take my home with me. It is hot here in Seattle this week,,,, where is it cooler,,,,, I would take my home there...?

I'm going to the ocean!

Michael Jackson, Dr. Murray, and IV Propofol

More details continue to emerge in the tragic death of Michael Jackson. This from TMZ:

Two days after Jackson's death, Dr. Murray told LAPD detectives he administered Propofol to the singer hours before he died ....We're told Dr. Murray gave Jackson an IV drip of the powerful anesthesia. Police believe Dr. Murray simply wasn't paying attention when the singer's heart stopped beating. Authorities believe Dr. Murray may have actually fallen asleep during the time the drug was administered and may have awakened to find Jackson already dead from heart failure... It is considered reckless in the medical community for a doctor to administer an IV drip of Propofol without the patient being monitored by an EKG, which sounds an alarm when the patient's pulse drops too low. No EKG was found in the house.

If the above claims are true, then the actions by Dr. Murray are horribly reckless. I've commented earlier that Propofol is an extremely powerful sedative, used mainly to induce anesthesia in controlled settings like operating rooms. In these settings it is a very safe drug. To use this medication in a person's house without respiratory and cardiac monitoring, however, blows my mind. Sadly, it is appearing that his death could have been prevented.

BATIK WORKSHOP - 2nd WEEK

The second batik workshop was this past weekend and I did remember my camera! I even remembered to take a few photos!

Here are some of the ladies diligently working on their masterpieces.

I set up in my living room for painting, and we had just enough room.

Here they are waxing in the dining room. Drying took place in the laundry room and ironing in the kitchen!

It's a process, that's for sure!

Here are some of the paintings in progress below. The bird's nest is taken from a magazine photo and Diane added the branches. (These are all for both educational and personal use, so that is not a problem).
Below is Teresa's sunflower.
Here is Diane's bird's nest - it makes me think I'm in the tree looking down at it!
Here is Pam's lily.
I forgot to get photos of all of the paintings before they left for the day, but overall I think they all were happy with their completed paintings - they left with smiles on their faces!

Dustin's back at it.

Bright & Jester-y

I'm just fickle this summer for some reason. I was going to do green this week, but ended up doing "bright". No worries though - I think these turned out just fine.

I used Avon's "Fuchsia" for the base pink color - two coats, though one would have sufficed as far as coverage goes. Then I used my Nubar gold nail art pen to create a lattice on each nail, and fill in random diamonds just for some variety. I like it, though I think the fill color of the diamonds should have been different than the lattice lines. This would be a great manicure for Mardi Gras in green, purple & gold.

This week, I'm placing another Zoya order. They have a new color out in their fall collection called "Copper Penny" that I am just dying to get!

What's on your fall nail "must haves" list?

Meeting Mike Squires

I have previously written about Mike Squires. Mike Squires was a slick fielding 1st baseman for the Chicago White Sox while I was growing up. His defense and versatility kept him in the league for 10 seasons. His bat prevented him from becoming a full-time starter.
Last weekend, I had the chance to meet Squires for the first time. Technically, I met him a couple other times at Comiskey, but those meetings were quick handshakes or greetings, nothing more than any fan got from any ballplayer. Last weekend, I really met him.
I arrived late in the show and his line was pretty much done. I heard he drew a large number of people. Because it was near the end of his time slot and nobody was behind me, we got to talk for a bit.
Squires is currently a Special Assistant to the GM for the Cincinnati Reds. He looks in good enough shape to grab a glove and display the fielding form which won a Gold Glove in 1981. He was happy to be back in Chicago and to be greeted by so many fans.
I first cheered for Squires way back in 1975. Now 34 years later, I finally got to meet my baseball hero. If my old friend Ed reads this, he probably will be thinking that maybe now I will finally shut up!
Don't count on that.
Mike Squires and me in Rosemont, IL-July 2009.

Zoya Vanessa

OMG! this polish is probably my favorite from all the fall collection - it is so deep and sunny and creamy. I liked it so much that even made a matching toes.Check out gold flakes that i added on edge.

Hot Lips by Zoya

This post is about Hot Lips - lips gloss offered by Zoya to complement the fall collections of nail polishes. Where to start? I did not even opened the box yet, but already felt wonderful, berry smell of this lip gloss. Unlike most of the glosses this smell was so natural and cool, no smell of chemicals. The gloss itself is a little thick, but however provides easy , nice and even application. In the first 2 minutes it may feel a bit uncomfortable on the lips, but in 2-3 minutes this feeling is gone, i think this is because the gloss gets worm up by body temperature and "stick" to your lips. The really great thing about this lip gloss - is that it may stay on your lips for the really long time and is not affected a lot by drinking or making bobbles of the gum. It is not like real long lasting glosses that just gets like 8under your skin, i believe hot Lips create a long lasting wear effect because of its thickness. Using this gloss, feels so natural it does not feels or smells like chemical. So here are some swatches of this product, so you can compare how different shade looks on the lips.
