Surgical Roulette - Risks of Surgery with a Phony Plastic Surgeon

The Times Publication has an outstanding article chronicling the story of Dr. Peter Normann, an Arizona-based Internal Medicine and Emergency Room specialist who masqueraded as a plastic surgeon. In a span of seven months three unsuspecting patients died under his care. The article highlights the unfortunate and shocking stores of several of his victims. It's a fascinating read. From the article:

While the cosmetic horror stories described by the patients of Peter Normann represent some of the most egregious in the state's history, research shows they are part of a larger and growing danger of ill-equipped and inadequately trained plastic surgeons performing invasive cosmetic procedures.Normann, an emergency room and internal medical physician, was never certified as a plastic surgeon. In other cases, some Valley physicians certified to practice as gynecologists or even ear, nose and throat doctors have been found to be practicing cosmetic surgery, many with little more experience than a weekend training course.
The results are patients being left scarred, disfigured, and in three of Peter Normann's cases, dead.

In response to the growing number of phony plastic surgeons, the Arizona Medical Board released a Guide to Choosing a Cosmetic Surgeon. You can find it here.

Even here in Metro Detroit there are numerous physicians who are performing plastic surgery with little more than a weekend course's training. If you are thinking of having plastic surgery, make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. All members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, so this is a good place to find a plastic surgeon for you.

ARE YOUR EYES PLAYING TRICKS???

If you looked at this picture and thought you saw cows under a sun umbrella – well – you were right!
I must say that, no matter what else being married to my husband may be – it is not boring!
This is his latest invention! Since the cows are moved on rotational grazing every day they do not have shade in some areas – so now they will! He took one of our old “sunbrellas” and attached a pipe to the side of his water trough that the umbrella can slide into.
He’s convinced he won’t have to put the umbrella down in case of windy weather, but I can foresee a time when a tornadic wind gust may just take it all on a spin to ? ? ? ? I can envision a startled homeowner trying to explain what he’s seeing when this thing lands in his yard!
I think that conversation would be something like this: “Uh, officer, something strange just landed in my front yard. . . . . You want me to describe it??? . . . . Well, uh, it looks like, well – a redneck outdoor bathtub attached to an umbrella! . . . . (slight pause) . . . . Uh, no sir, I haven’t had a drink all day, but I might need one now!!!!”
WELCOME TO MY WORLD!!!!
The "girls" are eating machines!

Here is the water trough with the pipe attached on the left with the umbrella stuck in it!

Here's Rancher Mike talking to one of the girls!

Here's Rancher Mike moving the whole shebang - the water trough with umbrella attached with the mineral feeder attached to that. (Note the straw cowboy hat with purple feather!)And here's our motto: HAPPY COWS ARE TASTY COWS!!!

Blue glitter chunks

I am just loving these nails! I don't know the proper name for these hexagon shaped glitters but they sure are cute. I put the white acrylic on the tips first then added the glitters and topped them with clear. There are lots of different color options with these also. Have a fabulous day!

More tiger stripes! I have already shown this on my blog with a different clients nails but these pictures turned out so that you can see the detail a little bit better. The tiger stripes can be added to any color just to add a little bit of fun. I've also painted the actual stripes using all different colors of paint. White acrylic with hot pink tiger stripes is one cool example....so if anyone wants that combo let me know and then I'll add your photo to my blog.

Another first birthday party!

Now that all of our friends have kids, we've been going to a lot of first birthday parties lately. It's a lot of fun - we love seeing Colden play with other kids, and I like talking to other moms.

Yesterday, we drove down to Dolgeville for Cody's first birthday party! Cody is the little boy of our friends Amy and Andy, and the last time we saw him was at Tom's surprise birthday party last July when Cody was only about seven weeks old. He was so tiny! Yesterday, he was walking around and giggling and mixing it up with the dogs. Tom and Amy tried to get Colden and Cody to play together, but they were't having any of it with each other. Too cute!

Colden was great in the car. It was a long ride from Jay - almost four hours. Colden didn't start to fuss until about the last half hour of the ride when he just wanted to get the heck out of that car seat. I can't blame him - I get antsy when I sit too long, too. I finally appeased him for the last leg of the journey by giving him a box of Kleenex and just letting him take out tissue after tissue after tissue. It was actually kinda cute - he kept wiping his nose with his finger like he was trying to use the tissue but couldn't figure out how to get it up to his face.

At the party, Andy brought out Cody's little "four wheeler", and Colden loved it. There were little buttons on it that made noise and Colden loved climbing on and off of it. I think we're going to have to get one for him now!

We left after the cake, since we had a long drive ahead of us, and I was sure that Colden was starting to get worn out. Sure enough, we were no sooner at the end of their driveway when I turned around to look at Colden and he was completely conked out. Note the pile of Kleenex on the seat next to him!

So today Tom was going to plant the tomato, eggplant and pepper seedlings in the gardens, but there is a frost warning for tonight with temperatures supposed to be in the twenties, so no seedlings today. He might cut the grass later, but the sky is full of low, black clouds, so that might not work, either.

Whatever happens, after he gets done in the garage, he has promised me as much time as I want at the torch today. Yay! So I hope to have some new glass beads done today. I've been thinking that I am going to make some pendant and earring sets - one big focal for a pendant and two smaller, matching beads for earrings. I've got a lot of work to do before my big show in Glens Falls on the 13th and 14th of June!

A Tale of the Hawks and Wings

The Detroit Red Wings beat my Chicago Blackhawks to advance to the Stanley Cup finals. The Hawks had a great season and appear to be set to have a bright future.
When I was in Novi recently, I happened upon another convention. There was Ted Lindsay, one of the all-time great Red Wings. I couldn't pass up the chance to meet this legend. Apparently it was late in the show, because most of the crowd was gone. I had a little extra time to talk to the Hall of Famer.
At the time, the Detroit-Chicago series had not started. I joked with him that I really admired his playing career, but I was still solidly behind my Hawks. He reminded me that he played 3 of his last 4 seasons with the Hawks.
I had forgotten that a dispute with the management in Detroit, over his efforts to form a union, led to his being traded to the then-last place Hawks. Lindsay retired after 3 seasons in Chicago, where he helped the team reach the playoffs twice.
He came out of retirement several seasons later for one last run with the Wings. Naturally, he helped them reach the playoffs.
Lindsay is another of the great hockey players of the past who are simply classy gentlemen. It is always a pleasure to meet an NHL great!

Hooking away...

I'm just getting started on my new rug. I'm excited to work on this, I hope I can finish it in a short amount of time. Well, we'll see about that!
Happy weekend!

Seasons in the Sun

Our softball team at Lerner Newspapers didn't have much success on the field during our several seasons. We did have our moments though. Darryl Corter was a dispatch driver for Lerner Newspapers, while he attempted to get accepted at the Police Academy. Corter was also arguably our best hitter.
On one night, Corter hit 3 home runs and 1 double. After his first HR, the defense backed up, trying to play a little safer. It didn't matter, as Corter cracked one over the centerfielder's head for his second HR.
For his third at bat, the defense once again backed up some more. Once again, Corter smacked one over their heads. This time it was right field.
On his fourth trip to the plate, the defense basically backed up so far there was no way humanly possible for Corter to hit another HR. Instead (and undaunted), Corter laced a double to right-centerfield. Had I hit that same ball, it would have been an out, but with the outfield playing about 300 feet back, it dropped in nicely for a double for Corter.
Corter had other skills, too. He was a master at 'Strike A Pose', a game where we challenged him to copy various trophy poses, wrestling holds or famous monuments. My favorite of all-time was when he put the claw on himself. Kevin Von Erich would have been proud (and slightly unnerved).

My pattern for a new hooked rug

I thought I'd like to make a larger hooked project this time, so I am going to make a rug. Here is my pattern for it. It will be fun,,,, and of course I will be using bright colors.

I then drew my idea on Monks cloth. All ready to start! It will be 19 x 26, that's big for me, since my rug hooked projects are smaller and usually stuffed, like the rug hooked dolls I make.

Maybe I can start hooking this weekend. Til then...

Haylie Duff - Plastic Surgery?

Has Haylie Duff had plastic surgery recently? It appears so. Check out the new photo on Celebrity Smack, and compare it to the photo here. She appears to have had a reduction genioplasty, or surgery to reduce the projection of the chin. Her nose also appears to have been tweaked via a rhinoplasty. Overall I think the nose looks great, but the chin may have ended up a bit on the smaller side. I'll be interested to see how she looks when more photos come out. Hopefully it won't be a PR disaster like her sister Hillary Duff's veneers.

A Hardy Boy and a Luchagor

Amy 'Lita' Dumas is a former 4 time WWE Women's champion. Matt Hardy has won many titles in the WWE and is currently in a feud with his brother Jeff. Hardy and Lita were connected in and out of the ring for several years. Dumas is currently retired and involved in her band, the Luchagors.
Their offscreen romance soured when Hardy revealed that Dumas was cheating on him with fellow WWE wrestler Edge. This revelation resulted in Hardy's dismissal, followed by his return, followed by a storyline incorporating the sordid tale. Art imitated life.
I met the pair during happy times. They were appearing at the Brian Pillman Memorial Show. They were happy to chat and clown around a bit with all of their fans. It was less than 8 years ago, but Dumas and Hardy have experienced a lot together and apart in those eight years.

Pure Coral

So in this design i applied the conception that simplicity is beautiful.
This is not really much of the design, nut the color is adorable, and i also applied a coat of maybeline gold flakes on the top.
I really want to know what to you, guys, think about this design. I try not post basic and simple designs, unless i absolutely love it ( like this one) , because i am not sure if it is interesting. Please let me know in the comments if you like simple designs to be posted as well or not. Please be honest, i really need to know your opinion. Thank you

CUTE GLITTER TOES EVEN CUTER SHOES!

I'm not sure which one is cuter the purple glitter toes or the fabulous shoes! I love them both. This picture really inspires me to go shoe shopping. My husband says that I don't need any inspiration for shopping.

Wedding Nails

Elegant wedding nails. I just love this look for a wedding. They are sparkly white acrylic with a very light pink at the tip. Very subtle and elegant.

Jack Odanovich and SWSSA

I got to know Jack Odanovich while doing research for my online pieces about the Motor City Comic Con for Global Traveler and Johngy's Beat. Odanovich was a great subject, because he is a fan as well as an attraction at the MCCC.
Odanovich joined the Star Wars Society of San Antonio (SWSSA) in 2007, when a friend invited him to go to a convention in Los Angeles (CA). He was immediately hooked, Odanovich dresses up as Anakin Skywalker a few times a month for various events. Sometimes, the events are like the MCCC, where he will meet other Star Wars groups. These conventions are the perfect place for Star Wars groups to hang out with each other and meet new fans (like Kelley Jean, who donned an SWSSA tshirt in support of the group). Sometimes, even the celebrities get in on his act (like Christy Hemme, who had a blast with Jack).
Sometimes the events are hospital visits to young patients. To those kids, it is a rare moment of happiness. Odanovich says, "It's as if we are the real celebrities in kids eyes making them oooh and awe at the humming of our lightsaber or the fight sequences that we do or don't choreograph."
I was fortunate enough to witness many people approaching Odanovich for a picture. He graciously (and eagerly) posed with anyone who asked (including some celebs). It has been a real pleasure getting to know about Odanovich and the SWSSA.

My new job!

Back in January, I noticed a post on the website Beader's Showcase that the website About.com was looking for a new Guide to beadwork. It looked like something I'd be able to do, so I filled out an application one morning while Colden was napping and Tom was at work. It said that it could take six to eight weeks before applications were reivewed, so I figured it would be a while before I heard back. Still, the OCD-part of my personaliy kept sending emails to About.com to check the status of my application! Finally, in April, I was notified that I had been accepted into the first part of their training program, where I would create content for the website and then have it reviewed by an editor.

After I finished that two-week program, I was notified that I had been accepted into the second part of the training program where I would publish my content to a "dummy" site set up for me. That, I have to admit, was a little harder. I had two tutorials - one for a bracelet and one for square stitch - and they had lots of photos to upload. There was a batch upload tool, but it didn't work for the training process, so I had to upload each photo one at a time. I did most of the uploading late at night after Colden and Tom were asleep. And I thought the content that I wrote looked pretty good on the website. Still, there was that part of me that kept thinking that the job was going to go to someone else. At least, I told myself, I would have lots of great posts for my own blog if I didn't get the job!

But then after I submitted everything and got the kinks worked out (which there always are when publishing to the web), I got the notification that I had been hired as the new About.com Guide to Beadwork!

I am so excited to be the new Guide! I have so many ideas for projects and tutorials for stitches that I love. I have a million projects that have been sitting in my sketchbook for such a long time now, and now I get to bring them to life to share on About.com. I really want to make the site accessible to both beginner as well as more advanced beaders. I also want to have a lively forum going on there where people can post about the projects, the products or anything they have on their minds that is bead-related.

The site isn't live yet - I've been working on creating some new content and getting it on the site. I'll get the first set of instructions from my editors either tomorrow or early next week, so I'll be sure to let everyone know when the site goes live!

My show season continues this week and next week on Fridays at the Adirondack Farmers Market in Elizabethtown. Then on June 13 and 14, I will be showing at the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council's Spring Craft Festival in Glens Falls. You can find more information about the show and get directions on the website for the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council. This is the first time I have done one of their craft festivals, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Other things I want to mention:

Scarlett Lanson of Beadwork magazine has launched her second design competition, Use the Muse II! I participated in the first contest and had a great time - I'm looking forward to ordering my kit for her second contest. I don't know if I'll actually submit something this time, but the kit for the first contest was loaded with gorgeous beads, and it was a fun challenge to use the Muse component. You can find more information by checking out Scarlett's blog, "The Beader's Muse".

And on a more musical note (get it - musical note?), my little folk band, Sounds of the Northway, has received a second grant from the Open Meadows Foundation to help us with our newest recording project. We are compiling a repetoire of songs all about women's history. These are songs that we have been singing for years, and it is our plan to distribute the CD to local schools and do a series of live performances to promote the disc. We'll probably be going back into the studio in August or September to start recording. We'll be using Charless Eller Studios of Charlotte, Vermont again - they were the studio we used when we recorded our 2006 CD "Water, Women and Song". You can see more about the group on our website (which I really need to update!), Soundsofthenorthway.com.

I think that's long enough for today's blog post!

Multi-Color

Here is another crazy design i came up with yesterday. Hope you wont brake your eyes looking at it. I hate short nails, and i really want this damn paint to be delivered. Can not wait any longer.

Reese Witherspoon Eats Cookies to Look Younger - Nutricosmetics

According to an interview with In Touch Weekly magazine, Reese Witherspoon has been eating cookies which claim to have anti-aging properties. According to Pop Crunch:

The Walk The Line star is rumored a huge fan of beauty giant BORBA’s DeLuscious Vitamin Enhanced Cookies, which claim to combat fine lines and wrinkles.
The tasty treats come in different flavors including Oatmeal Raisin and Chocolate Toffee White Chocolate, and boast more than nine minerals and vitamins.

These cookies are commonly known as nutricosmetics, or foods believed by some to have anti-aging properties. Many of them have anti-oxidants and are packed with vitamins and minerals. Some examples include Borba's skin balance gummy bears and age-defying water. While it's big business overseas, nutricosmetics (or nutriceuticals) have not become as big a hit here in the U.S., although some high end stores do carry these types of foods.

What's my opinion? I think that virtually anything you eat that is good for you (fruit and veggies=good, fat fried salty foods=bad) will help keep you looking younger. That's common sense. I once worked with a plastic surgeon who loved Burger King. He ate Whoppers all the time and his face was a greasy mess. I bet if he changed his diet he'd look much better. I often see this in my patients. The ones who don't drink, don't smoke, stay out of the sun, and eat good foods look younger than the ones who do all of the above.

It's just that they might not have as much fun in life...

Lovely Kareena Kapoor HQ Scans

Kareena kapoor Super Sexy and bare feet

After a long time, some high quality scans of Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) from various magazines. She is looking remarkably lovely especially in the HQ scans below, from OK magazine shoot.

Big Boy Denny at Big Boy, Not Denny's

Oh how I toiled over the headline on this one. Imagine the comic fodder of a big man named Denny, eating at a Big Boy's instead of at Denny's. Okay, maybe I just find it particularly funny. Recently, while eating my breakfast at the Big Boy in Novi (MI), I saw former Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain. I believe McLain resides in the Detroit area.
McLain and I went to the same high school (Mount Carmel in Chicago) although many years apart. He was signed by the White Sox, but started his mlb career in Detroit. McLain is the last 30 game winner in the majors.
I did not approach McLain, because I don't like to bother people in situations like this. McLain was there to enjoy a breakfast (Eggs Benedict, to be precise). Had I met him in the parking lot, I would have tried for a picture with him.
My friend and I sat at our both and we joked about Denny not eating at Denny's. Then we mentioned that he was a big boy (man). It all seemed like a natural joke just sitting there.

Dimple Kapadia from the movie Saagar

Discovered by Raj Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia was one of the foremost sex symbols of Bollywood in the 80's. She was known for her glamorous looks, sex appeal and challenging roles but was most recognized for her performances in Bobby and Saagar which catapulted her to a sex symbol status.

The photos below are HD screenshots of a hot song featuring Diple and Rishi Kapoor from the movie Sagar. The song's name is Jaane Do Na (click to watch on youtube).
