Jennifer Aniston on Botox and Diets

"I could do it, and I mean these lines are getting deeper every day, but when I tell you what's happened to me - these lines are just about living. Look, I eat really well and I work out, but I also indulge when I want to. I don't starve myself in an extremist way. You're not taking away my coffee or my dairy or my glass of wine because I'd be devastated." - Jennifer Aniston on why she won't get Botox and dieting in British Harper's Bazaar.

You Really Turn Me On

Today's manicure is another nerdy manicure. :-P They were inspired by the power button on your computer, monitor, XBOX, TV, etc. Silly, I know, but I like doing nerdy designs. Plus, I have been on the XBOX waaaaay too much lately. I watched the entire five seasons of Weeds on streaming Netflix in a matter of days. Yeah, I don't half-ass stuff, I go ALL out. :-D I call it dedication, others call it sad. :)

I used China Glaze Millennium as a base, and I have to say, as much as I love and rave about this color for nail art and Konading, I do NOT like it as an all-over color on me. For the On symbols, I used China Glaze Millennium mixed with American Apparel Hassid. Topped it off with Seche Vite top coat.

What a turn-on.

Bob Uecker is in the Hall of Fame

This past weekend, Bob Uecker was inducted into the Hall of Fame...for the WWE. Still, I can add him to my list of interviews with Hall of Famers.
My chat with Uecker was unplanned, but there is a bit of history behind it. In 2007, on a baseball trip to Milwaukee, Chuck T. Gekas, JayHawk Evans and I almost talked to him in the pressbox. That was a bit of a spontaneous thing, too. Because it was unplanned, we didn't have our usual press credentials and we were a bit late getting to the pressbox. Uecker was about to go on the air.
Early in 2009, my friend and GT big cheese Fran Gallagher golfed with Uecker near Philadelphia (PA). I featured Fran and Uecker in a Friendly Encounters.
In July of 2009, my nephew (and videographer) Matt and I were on the field in Milwaukee when we saw Uecker enter the dugout and sit on the bench. I approached him and mentioned the Gallagher golf adventure. Uecker gave me a short, funny rant on Fran and asked us a few questions. I posted the Uecker interview on YouTube (with all of my interviews).
The interview slowly gained viewers and ratings. Then suddenly, it seemed to gain a new life. When I checked the 'stats and data', I saw that it was reposted on the Howard Stern Fan Network message board. I am not sure about the connection, but I am grateful for the bump in attention.

Who's Getting Breast Implants? And the Portrait 3D by Axis Three

Last night I was featured in a segment on the local NBC affiliate Channel 4 WDIV in a segment titled Who's Getting Breast Implants? In the segment we meet a patient of mine and you can even see how we've been using the Portrait 3D by Axis Three to help the patients decide what size breast implant to use. To view the streaming video, click here.

Thanks to Sarah Mayberry and Dr. Frank McGeorge for a great segment.

Tokyo Girl Likes Her Backpack

Felicity Marble

Sorry I missed last week's post. A head cold and a seriously busy week at work got the best of me, I'm afraid. The good news is, last week's manicure is already scheduled to post next week, so I'm caught up for two weeks now. :-)

I decided to play with simple brush marbling this week - and I was going to do a video for you, but couldn't find the tripod. I will definitely get this done sometime this spring - I really like how it turned out (just ignore my poor clean up job, if you don't mind - I was in a hurry this morning).

I started with a base of Pure Ice "Platinum" - two coats over Seche Vite base coat.
Then I took Zoya's "Felicity", which is a semi-sheer light pink, and sort of swirled it on very lightly just using the brush in zig-zag motions over the nail.
I did that a few more times, alternating swirls of Platinum and Felicity for a light marbled look, and then I brushed CND Effects "Raspberry Sparkle" over the whole thing for shimmer. Unfortunately, it just doesn't show very well in photos - it's a pretty subtle effect.
Then I added a few faux pearls...just for some interest/texture, and covered them with a coat of Seche Vite topcoat. (Excuse the blurry photo - I need to find that tripod!)
Something still wasn't quite right...so I decided to see what it would look like with Essie's "Matte About You" topcoat to matte everything down. I put a drop of Seche topcoat on the pearls to keep them somewhat shiny. I really like the way it turned out, soft and almost satiny with a slight pink shimmer.
I still think these need "something" - maybe take the pearls off all but just the one nail with three. But overall, I love how the colors swirled together and matted down. I think it would work with any sheer polishes. I'll be trying it again, certainly.

Happy Easter, and happy polishing until next time! :-)

Ch-Ch-Chain of Fools

Today's nails were inspired by the obvious... chains. :-D My friend at work said I should've done whips on the other hand and gone with a whole bondage theme. :-P I've have this idea milling about in my head for a while now, and finally decided to do it. Originally in my brain, it was more complex, with shading and depth and whatnot, but once I laid down the initial shapes, I liked it simple and graphic, so I left it. :) (hope you like it too!!)

I used American Apparel Hassid as a base, with China Glaze Millennium for the silver chains, and China Glaze 2030 for the gold. :) Topped it all off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat, because I wouldn't want the chains to break, right?!

So in closing, I feel the need to add this.... because it kept coming up when I was trying to think of titles for this post....

You ARE the Weakest Link.... Goodbye! :-P

(p.s. none of you are weak links, I just found this amusing :-P )

I'm excited to see The Last Song. I'm a big fan of Nicholas Sparks, Miley Cyrus, and Liam Hemsworth. In fact, I'll admit that I'm mainly psyched about Liam Hemsworth. This break-out-star is about to be a sensation. He's gorgeous, talented, and quite a hit with the young ladies. Check him out in The Last Song in theaters tomorrow.

The Midnight Express

The Midnight Express has gone through a few configurations since their debut in 1981. Perhaps the best or most well-known version consisted of Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condrey.
The Condrey-Eaton combo won a bunch of tag team titles in many organizations. Their original run ended in 1987. Eaton stayed with the Express and was joined by Stan Lane.
The Midnight Express was so successful and so popular that they were often cheered, despite being bad guys. Their feud with the Rock and Roll Express was so well-received that independent organizations still bring in the teams for matches against each other.
I met Eaton and Condrey in Kokomo several years ago. I had met Eaton previously and he was such a nice guy. Condrey proved to be cool as well. We talked about their run as a team and how they still team on occasion. Neither of them ever envisioned the longevity they would have.
Whatever success and longevity these two have had is well-deserved. They are certainly two of the good guys (even when they are "bad guys").

Flight of the Bumblebee

Fun fact of the day: Melissa means bee/honey. It comes from Greek mythology, where Melissa was a nymph who discovered honey and its uses, and fed Zeus honey when he was a baby instead of milk. Crazy, eh? Today's nails are inspired by my name! :)

I used Orly Snowcone as a base, with American Apparel Hassid for the flight path, and for the black outlines/stripes of the bee, American Apparel Manila for the body of the bee, and a mix of American Apparel Cotton and American Apparel Mount Royal for the wings. Topped it off with only one coat of Seche Vite top coat, as I was running low on time.

Where do you think the bee is heading to?

Maybe to see his 'honey'? haha!

Friendly Encounters

This is weekly feature highlighting friends who have met celebs.

When we last saw Nick Verveniotis, he was hanging with Ronnie "Woo-Woo" Wickers (not Ronnie "Woo-Woo" Burke). That appearance on Johngy's Beat surely brought Nick a lot of exposure and probably some endorsement deals. Nick has been hounding me ever since to allow him to appear again in Friendly Encounters.
Nick's a good guy, but people are waiting in line to appear in Friendly Encounters. Okay, well maybe some day they will be, but it is an internet sensation. Okay, fine, it is a well-read regular feature on this site.
Still, I must hand out Friendly Encounters' slots judiciously. I couldn't have Nick reappear so quickly. It would look bad, despite how popular Nick is. It would look like I couldn't get others.
Now enough time has passed (and softball season is upcoming and we might need an occasional sub), so it is time to highlight Nick again.
Last time, Nick was with a figure who is extremely animated. This time he is with 5 actual animated characters. I am only reasonably sure he knows they aren't really alive. Even if he doesn't know, he is still probably better off than with his usual friends (me included).

CATTAILS

You can see the start of the cattails at the fluid acrylic workshop. This is on canvas and it’s not photographing very well – you can see too much canvas texture, but it’s the best I can do.
I began by taping off top of the cattail; then pouring some paint and letting it drip across the canvas, right over the reeds. In retrospect, I probably should have misketed them, since now I have to go darker to cover the water marks.
Anyway, I was happy with the water-y result in the background.
I then began painting in the cattail “puff”.

Very busy , but beautiful Nails

Hello my Sweet Nail-art lovers.
This nail design that i am posting today is kind of busy looking, a lot is going on on those tiny nails. It actually started as just a diagonal stripes of different shades of purple. When i decided to add a little gold, and when some stamp on the edge, and more stamp and the rhinestones.
I hope you ll like, because i am really thrilled with the result, even thought the design came to me really spontaneous.

It's like But-tah

Today's nails were inspired by the fact that I wanted to use my new butterLONDON polish in Rosie Lee. :-D I'm usually not a pink girl, but I this is a very purty glitter. :-P Adding the halftone dots make it less girly, right?! RIGHT?! I just finished Season 3 of Weeds on Netflix Instant Queue or whatever its called when I watch it through my XBOX. That makes 3 seasons in less than a week. I think I may have a problem. Or drink too many caffeinated beverages, not sure.

I used butterLONDON Rosie Lee as a base, with American Apparel Peacock applied with Konad Plate m60. Topped off with two coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Beauty Junkies:

I've been reading this very interesting book by Alex Kuczynski, called Beauty Junkies: Inside our $15 Billion Obsession with Cosmetic Surgery. I'm about halfway through, and have really enjoyed it so far. The writer is a 30-something woman who explores the past, present, and future of cosmetic plastic surgery. So far she has followed a woman on a surgical safari in Africa, chronicled the history of plastic surgery from World War I to today, explored the boom in non-plastic surgeons performing plastic surgery with its sometimes terrifying results, and detailed how the definition of beauty may (or may not) have changed over hundreds of years.

It's a fascinating read for anyone interested in plastic surgery and beauty in general. And no, I'm not one of the many esteemed plastic surgeons quoted in the book.

Thanks for reading.

Sleep Deprivation and Mommyhood

Everyone told us when I was pregnant that once Colden hit four or five months old, he would start to sleep through the night and we would be back to getting six or maybe eight hours of sleep a night. Great, right? So we used that thought to comfort ourselves through the first four months of being parents, when Colden needed to eat every two hours, and we found ourselves sleeping whenever we had fifteen minutes to spare.

When he was about five months old, he did start to sleep longer, and at first, like any new mom, I would find myself waking up at two hour intervals anyway, and creeping into his room to check on him and make sure that everything was okay. (Which it always was.)

And then my mom got sick and went into the hospital down in Galveston, and Colden and I went down there to see her, because we weren't sure if we were going to get to see her again. I stayed with my sister, and my sister found a pack-n-play for Colden to sleep in while I got the air mattress on the floor of their spare room.

Colden did not like that pack-n-play. The first night that I put him in it, he just screamed and screamed. Not wanting to wake up the entire house, and desperate for some rest after a twelve hour trip from upstate New York, I put him in bed with me and let him sleep there. For the remainder of my trip to Texas, which was the last time I saw my mom, every night I would tuck Colden into bed next to me to comfort both of us.

The day after I got back to New York, my mom passed away, and Colden did not want to go back to sleeping in his crib. Again, mostly as comfort for me, I would just tuck him into bed next to me and Tom at night and let him sleep there.

Because he was sleeping right there with us, he got used to being able to nurse all night, on demand. And I, desperate for sleep, would very often just let him nurse as I went back to sleep, thinking that it would make all of us happier people.

Eventually, it started to wear on me, being constantly on call for Colden 24/7. When we tried to get him back into his crib, it was horrible for everyone. He would scream until he made himself throw up, which wasn't fun for him, and certainly didn't let Tom and I get any sleep, anyway. I just couldn't bring myself to let him scream it out every single night because I just felt like that was cruel, but he wouldn't sleep longer than an hour at a time at night in bed with us, anyway.

Finally, in January of this year, right before his second birthday, I set up the Big Boy Bed in his room, made up with all sorts of his favorite comfy blankets, his stuffed animals, and a warm pillow. At first, he resisted it, but then once we instituted a new bedtime routine, he started to fall asleep on his own, in his own bed, clutching his Eeyore or his Po or his birdie.

It wasn't perfect, though, and we still have yet to get through two nights in a row where Colden does not wake up calling for "Ma-ma" and wanting a cup or bottle of milk. Some nights, I am just too exhausted to put him back to bed and we let him get back into bed with us. And then lately there have been nights where he will kick me and Tom, pull my hair, and generally thrash about, making all of us miserable and sleep-deprived the next day.

It's getting so hard to function during the day when I only get three or four hours of sleep at night. We put Colden to bed at eight, usually, but then I try to stay up for a couple of hours and finish up whatever work I didn't get done during the day. Bu the time I'm ready to go to bed at ten, Colden is usually awake and crying for me, so I have to put off going to bed until I can get him back to sleep, usually in our bed, which means that once again, Mommy gets about six inches of bed and four inches of covers in which to make herself comfortable. And when you add a 90-lb Moose into the mix, well, I get even less space to sleep.

I know I'm not the only one with a toddler with sleep issues, but it's really starting to wear on me. If Tom goes to Colden, Colden just screams his head off, this high, shrieking primal scream, and Tom can't do a thing with him. If Tom tries to change his diaper, he kicks and rolls and frustrates the hell out of Tom. If Tom tries to do bedtime routine with him, he can get as far as turning off the light, but then Colden won't get into bed and just cries for Ma-ma until I pick him up and rock him in the rocking chair for a few minutes before tucking him into bed.

The last few days, Tom said something to me about the circles under my eyes getting worse, and truthfully, I hadn't looked into a mirror in over a week, so I had no idea. As I was getting into my shower this morning, I looked, and I didn't like what I saw. The circles ARE getting worse. I look as if I've got two black eyes, and lately, I'm so tired that when Colden wakes up in the middle of the night, I get angry and swear a lot because all I want is to just go to sleep.

The other day, I was so tired that I took a three hour nap alongside Colden after we had our lunch. I regretted this later when I realized that after I got up, did the dishes and straightened up the house, cooked dinner, did the dishes again and got Colden into bed that I had a huge pile of work and emails waiting to be finished. That's the trade-off: I can take a nap during the day if I can stay up late at night and finish my work, but then the problem becomes what happens at night when Colden wakes up and then I can't get any more sleep. At the risk of using a cliche, it really does become a vicious cycle, and it ends up with me getting no sleep and getting stressed out about losing my job because I can't keep up with the work.

I would love to hire some help, just someone to come in to the house two or three mornings a week to be a mother's helper and amuse Colden while I got my work done, but when I'm making $675 a month and trying to pay off medical bills from two years ago still, who can afford it? Daycare is absolutely out of the question because we certainly can't afford THAT, and the nearest licensed daycare is either in Lake Placid or twenty minutes in the other direction up in Clintonville.

And then this last week, something has changed in Colden's bedtime routine with him, and I can't figure out what it is yet. Last Sunday night, Colden would not go back to sleep, no matter what I did, unless I stood up with him and carried him throughout the house. I thought I might lie down on the couch with him sprawled out onto me, but the second I sat down on the couch, he woke right up and started screaming again. Finally, around 2:30 a.m., Tom intervened and got Colden a bottle of milk and a snack of cheese, dried cranberries and Goldfish crackers. He sat him up in our bed and put on Baby Einstein, and Colden sat there and giggled at the television and ate the entire bowl of snacks. I was in tears by that point, and I just desperately wanted to be able to close my eyes and go to sleep without a little foot kicking me in the back or little hands pulling at my hair. (Colden has this weird comfort thing about my hair, and yanking on it and rubbing it between his fingers is apparently a source of great comfort to him.)

Last night we had another one of those nights where Colden would not go back to sleep. He went to bed a little before eight, and Tom and I tried to snuggle up a bit and re-connect with each other, but I was so tired the second my head hit the pillow that I just fell asleep. Colden came into our room around eleven and was awake until at least two. We changed his diaper, we got him three bottles of milk, but he wouldn't go to sleep until we put on Baby Einstein and Tom got him another snack of Goldfish crackers and dried fruit.

Sometimes when I do have the opportunity to go to bed early, I lie there awake, because it feels like my brain is telling my body, "Don't even think about going to sleep - you'll just have to get up in an hour!" And that is extremely frustrating because I want to sleep, I need to sleep, but I just can't do it. Sometimes I will take a warm bath and I can feel myself falling asleep in the tub, and then I get out, ready to lie down and sleep, and of course, that's right when Colden wakes up and we have to start all over.

I know I'm not the only person on the planet who has a toddler with sleep issues. We feel as though we've tried everything: we have read The No-Cry Sleep Solution over and over, we have kept charts and logs about Colden's sleep or the lack thereof, and we've tried everything we can think of to create a soothing, predictable and relaxing bedtime routine for him. But the kid just cannot fall back asleep by himself. I'm thinking that this may be the time when I consult with the pediatrician, even though the last time I talked to her about it, she advised me to let him cry it out, and I am definitely NOT comfortable with the thought of causing my kid distress like that.

Last week, I had to go to a singing group rehearsal on a Wednesday morning, and I seriously had no energy and could feel my eyes closing as we sat and tried to come up with a repertoire for our upcoming gigs. I just have no energy left for anything anymore outside of work and Colden.

This morning, Tom went off to do maple sugaring for our friend in Paul Smiths for the day, and we won't be back until late tonight, if we're lucky. I just have to see how I can best get through this day - it's going to be hard. I find myself stressing out again over the pile of work that I have waiting for me this week, and I'm finding it hard to control my temper after having about three hours of sleep last night. I don't know if I will let myself take a nap when/if Colden naps this afternoon, or if I'll keep myself awake and see if I can get some sleep after Tom gets home.

Either way, there's things that gotta get done...

Johngy and Inky

Midway through the 2009 baseball season, Pete Incaviglia was passed by Raul Ibanez for most home runs by a player whose last name begins with the letter "I". Inky had 206 lifetime homers, while Ibanez has 216 and counting. Inky's #2 spot is relatively safe, as Brandon Inge is the closest active player behind him with 123 homers.
Inky was listed at 6'1" and 225 pounds. Usually, those stats are somewhat inflated, but in this case they seem deflated. I know the picture doesn't show it, but Inky seemed to be more than two inches taller than me.
Watching him on tv, I always thought he was even bigger. Maybe it is just my perception. He always just seemed like a big dude.
I also didn't realize he played so much outfield as opposed to DH, despite being in the AL for most of his career. He was a DH for only 150 games, as opposed to playing over 1,000 in the outfield.
In either case, Incaviglia was a nice guy. There was some confusion over his times and tickets and other stuff, but he still took time to talk to me for a brief bit. We talked about him playing for Philadelphia in the 1993 World Series and later playing in Japan. He had a long and interesting career.
