Gary Busey - What a Mess...

How would you like to meet Gary Busey in a dark alley? Make Me Heal has a nice post giving many plastic surgeons' opinions on his possible plastic surgery, dental veneers, and brain injury. Take a look at it here.

Thanks for reading.

FRANKENSTEIN VS WITCH

My client came in today and said I could do whatever I wanted on her nails so this is what happened! I used acrylic in nebula, lime rind, and purple passion. I alternated different colors on the nails and tips. I also used a frankenstein and witch fimo clay from kennickkreations.com. Of course I had to add a few dots here and there. HAPPY HAUNTING!

These nails are done with northern lights and then I used purple passion acrylic at the smile line and faded it up into the white. I used clay witches on the ring fingers from none other than kennickkreations.com.

JACK O'LANTERN NAILS

These are acrylic nails in nebula black with ezflow candy corn orange at the tip. I added fimo clay jack o'lanterns from kennickkreations.com on the ring fingers. My client was feeling wild today so we went even further and added black and orange dots with polish at the smile line.

BOO!

These nails have a fimo clay BOO! on the ring fingers. I painted black tiger stripes at an angle on all of the nails.

Making progress

I am making progress on my sketchbook for the Sketchbook Project. I am happy with the way it is turning out (I wasn't at first). Maybe it had something to do with the fact I will never see it again. It will however, travel all across the US for many to enjoy. I like that part. A piece of me traveling all over, perhaps to places I have never been or seen, mysterious places unknown.
See that little tree horned guy up in the upper right? I made him for
Gustavo Aimar's 3 x 3 project. He looked so cute, I attached him by staple to the page. More on that a little later.

Mickey's Birfday

Yesterday was Mickey's birfday! We spent the day shopping, eating and drinking. Jamie probably has the lapper photos, but this was the G rated Birfday Celebration.

Goodbye Summer Nail Art Contest - Winners!

First, thank you to everyone who entered this month's nail art contest. Lots of fabulous entries here, and it was hard choosing a winner! Without further ado, here are your contest winners!

Lisa from Nail Art World was my #1 pick for the first Grand Prize, with her "Sunset Heat" manicure. I think this really represented the "sunset" of summer, and the execution was very well done. Congratulations, Lisa!
Anna S. won the People's Choice vote and the second Grand Prize, as you can see by the poll to the right. She entered this stunning leaf manicure...and it was one of my personal "runners up" as well. Wonderful job - Congratulations, Anna!
Finally, I decided to award Thriszha of FAB UR NAILS an Honorable Mention, for her lovely "Highlighters" manicure that was a very clear second in the People's Choice vote (and another of my personal runners up). Thriszha, you'll get a set of Halloween Decals as your prize. Congratulations! Wonderful job, ladies, and great job to all who entered! I loved seeing all of your lovely artwork. Winners, please email me your mailing address, and I'll get your prizes sent out right away.

What do you say - anyone want to do this again?

Excuse me for getting excited, but I've just done something I've always wanted to do!

The Galaxies Greatest Comic, 2000AD has just published my first cover - Prog 1656, "Morked for Death":

I think I'll let this post sit here for a bit, whilst I take in the sheer joy of achieving a LIFELONG ambition...!

Time for a stiff drink.

The Franchise:Shane Douglas

Shane Douglas wrestled for several organizations during his 20+ years in the ring. He won many titles, but was never really a main-eventer in the big companies.
Douglas has stated that Ric Flair is partially responsible for holding him back. The two had feuds on and off-screen. Wrestling, like everything else, can be an ugly business and it is hard to tell what really happened.
I met Douglas at the Brian Pillman Memorial Show in Cincinnati (OH). I was a bit surprised with how fan-friendly Douglas was. Douglas took extra time, beyond his assigned time, to meet as many fans as had lined up for him. Not only that, but he was eager and talkative the whole time. That is really going above the norm.
It makes me wonder even more. He had good wrestling skills, was good on the mic and was a hit with the fans. Who knows why some guys really make it and others don't. Douglas has had a fine career, but I am left curious as to why he did not ascend to greater heights.

Nearly Plaid & Barefoot

Wow! 336 votes in the People's Choice Contest so far! Haven't voted yet? Click here. Then come back to see this week's nail art design.

Haircare Discounters, an online company who sells the entire line of OPI polishes (for less than you'd find it in stores - links in the sidebars) was kind enough to send me a couple of free polishes this month. OPI "Barefoot in Barcelona" was one of my free bottles, a sort of dark rose pink that I think is a wonderful neutral. I was late getting to my manicure this week, and tired, so I decided to use my black and white migi pens to create a simple design.
First, the base - two coats of OPI "Barefoot in Barcelona". It's been awhile since I dug into my OPI collection, but this formula is to die for! Notice my cuticles (yeah, aside from the serious dry skin)? Most of my polish jobs are messy to start, but this polish was just a dream to control going on. Far less mess than normal.
Then, after using my thumbnail as "practice" to see how far I'd take the design, I decided on just two offset crosses in sort of a beginning plaid design. I started with white.
Then added black on top. If you try this, you can do it while the polish is still wet. Just make sure not to let the tip of the pen touch your nail or the paint.
A couple coats of top coat, and it's all done (you can see my "experimental" plaid thumbnail here too). Remember that most nail art colors "drag" or bleed when you go to apply top coat, so do the first coat in one swipe over the artwork, not letting the brush actually touch the nail. After that dries, you can brush the final coat on as normal.

My lines aren't all that straight - my hands were shaky from a day's worth of physical labor. But I don't think it turned out too bad. My husband says it reminds him of some popular art style.

Next week starts four weeks of Halloween nail art, starting with some brand new Halloween decals the folks at Cina sent me to show you. They'll be available exclusively at Sally Beauty Supply during the month of October...come back next Tuesday for a peek!

Joe Torre and Johngy:Part 2

The last time I saw Joe Torre, I was in the Los Angeles Dodgers dugout partaking in his pre-game interview session. That was my first taste of an interview session like that.
Several weeks ago, when I ran into Torre again, it was one-on-one and it did not turn out as well. Nothing happened. Torre politely turned down my request. He did add that I could try to catch him after the game in the dugout if I wanted.
I thanked him anyway and later chose not to approach him after the game. I had other post-game plans and I had already gotten a few good videos from other players.
I wasn't mad or even upset in the least. Actually, I was kind of pleased with his attitude towards me. I am not a beat writer, nor am I a writer for one of the big sports media outlets. My work is here and for Global Traveler magazine.
I always thought Torre was a class act. He had a great playing career and he is having a great managing career. Getting a polite decline from a future Hall of Famer isn't all that bad.

Black Lace Manicure

Recently i have been crazy about black, white and orange nail colors. Is it a good sign?
I really enjoy this look, i think it is gentle and stylish. I again was inspired my Boudoir collection from CC.I mean, seriously, just look at those gems - aren't they stunning? And i really love that even with the top coat over it, they are still super sparkly. Again, it is a little piece of mirror in every gem.

HALLOWEEN

It's time for Halloween nails! I added acrylic in candy corn by ezflow at the smile line. On the ring finger there is a fimo clay spider from kennickkreations.com. I also added black tiger stripes at an angle with a striping brush. Happy Halloween!

AUTUMN

I used two colors of acrylic here in purple spinel and plum loco. I added fimo clay leaves that I purchased from kennickkreations.com. I also added dots with polish.

Pete Burns Wins Settlement in Plastic Surgery Lawsuit

Former 1980's Dead or Alive singer Pete Burns has won a settlement for botched lip surgery, according to The Plastic Surgery Channel. He won the equivalent of about $900,000 from a doctor who injected a product, Outline Original, known to create bad side effects. Eventually Burns was left so disfigured that he could only drink through a straw and became a recluse, even contemplating suicide. Burns has said that he needed to undergo 100 additional operations to fix the problem.

I've never heard of Outline Original, and because of the high risk of side effects am choosy with what I inject into the lips (only fat, Restylane, Juvederm, and Prevelle). Hopefully the money Burns won in the settlement will help him get "right round."

From my archives

I've been really busy getting my son ready for college so I have been a little distracted lately. Here is one of my pages from my journal that was published in "1000 Artist Journal Pages".
I'll get back to making art in no time, I'm just sort of off balance right now.
See you soon.

ODE TO A WAITING ROOM

When left alone in a doctor’s waiting room, the quiet must settle my mind – the gurgle of the (seawater) fish tank pump (with some cute little clown fish, some pretty colorful ones and one really, really big ugly fish); low volume Muzak featuring what sounds like Yanni (or is that Yawni!); drops of rain on the skylight; the nurse shuffling papers; the whir of the copier – all a gentle white noise.

The ideas start to flow and everything seems a good idea! Well, why not – I’m a captive – only my mind is free to roam.
A list of necessary jobs for ViewPoint consumes several minutes – I’m chomping at the bit to get them completed.
Then a short list of pictures to paint – some begun, some not.
Another list of the order in which it all should be done.

I’m full of energy and hope! I know it won’t last – as soon as I get home I’ll get right on the ViewPoint because I have to, then the excitement will fade and it will be so easy to forget and let it all slide again. That’s my usual modus operandi – guess I’m just a dreamer at heart.

More waiting time . . .
ideas for fixing up my painting area at home
ideas for a commission
“Why is lighting so bad in an eye doctor’s office – perhaps he’s creating his own future patients?”
“Why didn’t I bring that granola bar?” (that’s sitting on the dining room table at home)
“Will I feel “icky” looking at that eye patch?”
read a little – but - bad lighting, remember!
“Yaw-w-w-w-n”
walk around the room and stretch
“Nurse is playing solitaire on the computer – wonder what she gets paid?”
“My hair needs a trim”
count waiting room chairs – 25 – seriously???? - think that many people are ever here waiting? How large a patient backlog would that represent? Maybe some folks bring the whole tribe!
look out the window at the rain – which has been coming down in fits and spurts all week
stretch
watch the fish again
find some information about ophthalmic (ocular) migraines
“I could use a laptop right now – think of the timesaving that would be”
read a little more . . .
think about lunch – “Will I be on an eye patch diet?” (It didn’t bother me, nor did seeing the actual eye post surgery!)

Finally I hear my husband’s voice – I can find him in any crowd if I just listen a moment! He’s been regaling the operating room staff with tales of cows, no doubt!

Finally ready to head out on this dreary day and get my “work” day started after lunch – at 3 p.m.!!!

I’ll have to wait for the next waiting room experience to fuel my creative energy again!

Flakes

Just some random polish pictures.
Flakes polishes are gorgeous and this one delivers really deep and awesome Halloweenish look. This is quit rare that i decide go without design on the nails, but this polish is design itself

What Books Inspire You?

I have been trying to read books that will help me in business as well as in life lately. I have listed a few that I have enjoyed and that had a really great perspective on life. The One Minute Entrepreneur surprised me with it's advice and moral view on doing business. I highly recommend this book. I did list a few that were just entertainment, I tend not to read for fun enough. The Last Cato has twists and turns and is just fun! Do you have any books you would like to share with us either helpful or great entertainment? Please let me know and I will share them with everyone else. Thanks Lisa

Aftermath: Games Day 2009

Just a quickie to say thanks to everyone (including my old chum, Hans - hope you won that Golden Demon!) who took the time to come and say hello, get their books/ t-shirts signed and have a chat about my work - it's always great to meet both the familiar and new faces who appreciate the time and effort that goes into each piece.

Not forgetting a big THANKYOU to the BL staff who looked after me in the Hotel and made me feel very welcome at the show.

In similar news, I'll be attending the British International Comic Show next weekend (October 3rd-4th) so if anyone is going that way, make sure to say hello!

Friendly Encounters

This is another in a series of meetings of my friends and celebs.

When we last saw my sister Nancy, she was pictured with a horse she befriended in NY. Today, she is back with a less animated "friend". Nancy and Dave went to the Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford (IL). When she saw the Japanese Icons, she jumped at the photo opportunity, hoping it would land her in Friendly Encounters.
Okay, I know the rockhead isn't really a "friendly encounter". Still, there really aren't any rules here and if there were, I would be the one making them anyway. So here she is, my sister with her friend the Rock (no not Dwayne Johnson).

Color+Overlay Layer Tutorial!

Finished up another video today. Trying to address more questions! I know the previous grayscale - color video was crap quality so I made another. Hopefully this one will show things a bit clearer and will be slightly easier to understand. Please forgive me for the puppy kitty noises :(. Its hard to avoid so much distraction sometimes haha.

I've got a lot of stuff I wanna cover in my next post but I've already spent a lot of time putting this together today so its gonna have to wait!

Hope you guys get something outta the video! And feel free to leave me questions or suggestions for my next video :).
