On Memorial Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

-John McCrae, 1915

I remember every memorial day weekend growing up my mom would always have a crepe paper poppy attached to the strap of her purse, and I remember that whenever I was with her, she would give me a dollar to donate so i could have one too. I loved those little paper flowers, though I hardly understood their significance way back then. Memorial Day is for remembering, for honoring, and for thanking those who have given their lives, or are risking their lives to make sure that we have the rights and liberties that we have here in America. My grandfather was a veteran, and I remember visiting his and my grandmother's graves every Memorial Day and looking at the flags pushed into the earth of their graves. My sister played TAPS on her trumpet at the cemetery, so it was mostly my mom and I, since it was her parents. I suppose that I'm blessed in the fact that not many of my loved ones (friends or family) are in any branches of the military, I have a couple of friends serving in various branches, and for that, I thank them, but I never have to worry about a family member not coming home, like so many others in this country. Regardless of that fact, I extend my thanks and eternal gratitude to those serving this magnificent, though sometimes flawed, country of ours. In honor of our armed forces, I did the logos for the Marines, the AIr Force, the Navy, and the Army, as well as the American flag accented with what else, a poppy. :) I apologize that the logos aren't perfect, but I did what I could with the space I had. ;)

I used:

Thumb: American flag & poppy

American Apparel Cotton as a base with CND Anchor Blue for the blue, and China Glaze Salsa for the red of the stripes as well as the poppy. for the black I used American Apparel Hassid, and for the green, I used CND Green Scene .

Index: Marines

American Apparel Passport Blue as a base, with China Glaze 2030 from Khrome Collection for the gold, and China Glaze Salsa for the red, over Sally Hansen All the White Stuff, so the red popped.

Middle: Air Force

China Glaze Millennium as a base, with CND Anchor Blue for the logo.

Ring: Navy

Sally Hansen All the White Stuff as a base, with American Apparel Passport Blue, China Glaze 2030 from Khrome Collection for the gold, Sally Hansen All the White Stuff for the shield, with CND Anchor Blue for the blue on the shield, and China Glaze Salsa for the stripes on the shield.

Pinky: Army

American Apparel Hassid as a base, with Sally Hansen All the White Stuff for the star, and outlined in American Apparel Manila.

Topped everything off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Triple Treat

Last week was incredibly productive for me. I don't know what I did right, but I got a ton of beading done!

I call this trio my "Triple Treat" - three designs, all using the same basic pattern. The green necklace I finished a couple of weeks ago, inspired by that awesome pendant by Lisa Peters Art. I decided to make a version of the necklace without a focal pendant that works great as just a nice, flat neckpiece with lots and lots of sparkle.

And then I decided to make a more cost-effective version using Czech fire-polished beads. The bracelet came out a little longer than I wanted it to be, so I'm still tweaking the sizes of beads to get it to come out the right length, but it stitched up super-quick in just over an hour.

So now I can move on to my next set of projects! I've got an incredible design all sketched out for a netted Renaissance Collar using tiny 3mm Swarovski bicones and top-drilled round pearls - it wouldn't look out of place on a queen. And then I had this strange idea for a wagon-wheel pendant with glass flowers and bamboo tubes. Sounds strange, but I think it might work up to be pretty cool in a Mae West kinda way.

This coming week is going to be nuts. I've got to finish uploading all the videos I shot for About.com and send off all the scripts, and try to get all these patterns I've been designing uploaded. I should have done more today, but I just couldn't get my act together, and the exhaustion today is just totally overwhelming. I haven't been able to get to Starbucks, my "office", since I found out I was pregnant last week, but I think I'm going to set aside two nights this week to get over there.

Get Your Body Beach Ready - Dr. Youn on the CBS Early Show

Here is a recent segment I did on the CBS Early Show where I demonstrated four interesting ways to get your body ready for bathing suit season. Two of these are take-home devices that really do seem to work! You can order the Wellbox and Silk'N online. And no, I do not get any payment from either of these companies. (although it would be nice if I did...)

Thanks to the CBS Early Show for inviting me to be on the program once again!

Thanks for reading.

Friendly Encounters

This is a special series about my friends meeting celebs.

When I did research on the
Motor City Comic Con before my first year of covering it, Jack Odanovich was the first person to help me. Jack shared stories and pictures and was a big help in the first pieces I wrote about the MCCC.
It doesn't look like Jack will be attending the MCCC this year, but I asked him for a quick update. As usual, Jack has been very busy.
So far this year, my Star Wars group and I have performed on stage at a second symphony, while my friend James (Mace Windu) fought myself to the "Duel of the Fates" song played in Episode 1. It was such a rush performing the skit in front of an almost sold out 4000 (?) audience, yet we were able to pull it off twice before, so we knew each others movements, making the crowd watch in anticipation and excitement as to what was going to happen next. (See my Facebook album "2010 Star Wars Events" for the pictures).
Another event we did was a costume contest at a minor league hockey game in front of 8,400 people...where a kid dressed as a Jedi won.
We previously volunteered at a special needs theme park called Morgan's Wonderland, where handicapped and less fortunate kids, who don't have the ability to go to a place such as Sea World or Six Flags and get on rides, can now go on a train, truck rides, a carousel and so on. It was an amazing experience having the chance to meet the owner of the park, David Robinson from the San Antonio Spurs and Eva Longoria Parker. (You can see those pictures in my profile's album and a select few on the Jack Odanovich Photography fan site.)
I really appreciated Jack's time and consideration when I was writing the firt pieces on the MCCC. I am always glad to hear his latest news. The Jack Odanovich Photography fan site is really full of beautiful pictures of nature, animals, architecture and other stuff in color and b/w. Jack knows a great shot when he sees one!

Lime Line

Today is another simple one, my apologies- it's been a super busy weekend- I made about 10 dozen cookies along with a bunch of other stuff!! :-P I used another of the new ULTA polishes that I got, In the Limelight, a lime green foil finished polish. Anyway, sorry for the short write-up, it's been a long day and I think its about bedtime.

I used ULTA In the Limelight as a base, with American Apparel Hassid for the lines. Topped it all off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

RIDSNAP Illustration

RIDSNAP is probably my favorite street fashion site on the web. I have personally met the owner and some of the people behind the scenes. I think one of the reasons I love it so much is not only because they capture the coolest styles from my favorite area of Tokyo (Ura-Harajuku), but because the people they seem to take pictures of are absolutely amazing and interesting in some way. They are snapping people that some could say are possibly up to 5 years ahead of trends in the west. That's one thing that's so great about Tokyo. People take style and they are creative with it. Trends are started sometimes by being anti-trend, or just starting something completely true to theirselves and their personality. Then street style sites and magazines like RIDSNAP pick up on this oiginality, and before you know it, all the coolest kids in Tokyo are mimicking these styles in their own way. I hope you guys enjoy this illustration, and be sure and check out www.ridsnap.com if you haven't yet. I check it daily, haha. *CREDIT GOES TO RIDSNAP for the photo.

BRWOOASH! SHHWWWWK!

I haven't had much time to myself outside of work but thanks to my awesome time management skills, I found time to work on some side projects. Other than finishing up my book I've been working on an online store and a killer photo book (which all should be finished by the end of the year). My design aesthetics has changed over the past year and I feel very much influenced by late 1980s early 1990s comics.

Vintage Inspired

I found this among the pieces of my mother's jewelry that were given to me last fall after we scattered her ashes in Texas.

I don't know anything about it, like where she may have gotten it, or when it was made, but I'm guessing from the materials and the design that it may have been made sometime in the 1940s or 1950s.

The peachy-colored baubles stuck in my head for weeks, while I tried to figure out a way to re-create them. Then when I saw the new Swarovski crystal pearls in that gorgeous coral color, I knew I wanted to use them to try to recreate the piece. A piece of copper chain and a funky square-shaped copper toggle from Artbeads was all I needed to complete the piece:

Trying to make these beaded beads was definitely a challenge for me. I used tubular right angle weave, which is one of my least favorite stitches, and went through many, many variations of the pattern. The first time I actually had one beaded bead stitched up perfectly, I realized that I hadn't taken any notes on what I did, so I had to tear the thing apart to see where my thread path went so I could re-create it! Note to self: always take notes.

It's really a cool little piece. I love the way the beaded beads jingle against the chain when I wear it. This is one that I think I will be submitting to a magazine or using as a class, if I can ever get my teaching schedule organized.

The last two days, I'm really starting to feel like I'm pregnant, although I have yet to be hit with the nausea that I had when I was pregnant with Colden. There are still times when I feel like I'm totally in denial about the pregnancy thing because I actually feel pretty good most days, if not a little emotional. The thing that's been the hardest so far is the exhaustion - and having to haul myself out of bed once, twice or three times a night to take care of Colden. Yesterday afternoon, I walked down the hill to the garage to pick up the car after we had it inspected, and today, I feel like I can barely move.

But if this is how I'm going to feel for this pregnancy, I'll take it over the constant nausea any day!

Autograph Tales:Van Halen

When I was a kid, Hegewisch Records was paradise. Hegewisch Records was a small record store located on South Torrence Ave. in Calumet City, IL. They had rows and rows of awesome albums and many cool tshirts, too. It was the place to go for your music needs or just to wander.
One Saturday, I was in Hegewisch Records when the manager announced that a band would be there soon to sign their debut album. The band was Van Halen and their album sold out quickly. I did manage to get a promocard and waited for the band.
None of us really knew Van Halen. We knew they were a new band and we liked the sound, but we had no idea how big they would become.
They arrived to a jam-packed Hegewisch Records. For Hegewisch Records, that probably meant about 150 people. They tried to limit everyone to one signature, but the logistics made it a little bit chaotic. You were basically forced to walk by each member anyway, so most of us got multiple signatures. I only missed getting Eddie Van Halen, but 3 out of 4 isn't bad!
A card signed by 3/4 of Van Halen in Calumet City, IL-October 1977.

ULTA-mate!

Today's manicure is simple, because I was busy busy today! :( I did get an AWESOME new Ulta Professional polish though, so I had to use it- unfortunately it was the only one left in the cardboard display (it's part of a special collection), and there is no label on it, so I don't know what the name of the color is, but I plan on investigating tomorrow... so not to worry, I'll update it in the info. It's gorgeous- a vivid pink with a LIME GREEN reflect?! Sign me up. Awesomeness. LOVE. Anyway. They also had in the same display a lime green FOIL polish- which had a label (In the Limelight), which is gorgeoustastical, I can't wait to use it too...I LOVE foils.

I used ULTA Professional awesome color with no label as a base, with China Glaze Cherish applied with Bundle Monster plate BM03 just to the upper corner of each nail. :) Topped it off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Bhanu Shree Mehra

Upcoming Telugu actress Bhanu Shree Mehra in a sexy photoshoot showing her long legs and bare feet in a short black pants. Bhanu Shree got a dream debut in Telugu films opposite superstar Allu Arjun in the movie Varudu. The actress in the movie was marketed as one who will not expose any of her body parts. Apparently the lack of success of the movie has quickly debunked that theory and Bhanu Shree wasted no time in getting a glam makeover.

Meeting Mick Kelleher

On a recent excursion to New York for a Global Traveler event, Louie and I went to a game between the Mets and Yankees at Citi Field. The Mets organization went beyond the call of duty to help us in our effort to do a piece on Citi Field. That piece worked out well and can be found here on GT's site.
One of the highlights was talking to Mick Kelleher (currently a coach for the Yankees). Kelleher played in the majors from 1972-1982. Five of those seasons were spent in Chicago and I was a big fan of his.
In the near future, I will be posting the interview with Kelleher. He talked about how he enjoyed Chicago (and this was before he knew we were from Chicago). I also asked him about his scuffle with Dave Kingman (who later became his teammate).
Before it ended, I told Kelleher that he had been one of my favorites while I was a kid. Kelleher seemed genuinely touched to hear that. I even asked for a posed photo with him (something I have never done on interviews). I figured I would never get this chance again.
This was a big thrill for me. I want to thank Nicole Chayet (Media Relations Coordinator for the Mets) for her valuable assistance. I want to tank the entire Mets organization for being so friendly and helpful. Finally, I want to thank Kelleher for taking the time to talk and for his years of effort in Chicago.

Schlongs & Songs

(sorry dad) :-P Tonight I'm going to a show called Naked Boys Singing here in Las Vegas. If you haven't heard of it, it precisely what it sounds like- buff, attractive men singing in the nude. Should be a good time. ;) So, today, for shits and giggles, I decided to attempt to paint the poster on my nails. What is it with me and naked men on my fingernails, seriously? :-D BTW, it is effing HARD to paint tiny little naked dudes on fingernails. HARD! (hee hee) Luckily, because I added the 'censor' bar to make it PG, I didn't have to paint any tiny penises.... or is it penii? ;)

the inspiration:

the nails:

I used OPI Who the Shrek Are You? as a base, with American Apparel Cotton as a base for the dudes and the orange stripe. For the orange stripe, I used essie Tart Deco, for the boys, I used MAC Abalone Shell, then shaded with Nubar Milk Chocolate Creme. For the black bar, I used American Apparel Hassid. Topped it all off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

How do you like your boys to sing? :-D

Zeltiq - Noninvasive Fat Loss - Too Good To Be True? No...

One of the hottest things in plastic surgery today, and what I consider the Holy Grail of plastic surgery, is Noninvasive Fat Loss. One of the latest to claim this is Zeltiq. This is a device which is FDA approved in the U.S. for other purposes, but many physicians are using it 'off-label' to remove fat without needles or surgery. How does it work?

Zeltiq chills the surface temperature of the skin, causing the fat below it to become irreversibly damaged. The body's natural clearing mechanisms then get rid of the fat over time, creating actual inch loss. According to an introductory study:

- Subjects were comfortable during the procedure and did not require pain medication.
- Cryolipolysis results in a visible contour change in a majority of subjects.
- 100% of a subset of ultrasound-evaluated subjects demonstrated a measurable reduction; the average for the group was 22.4% fat layer reduction 4 months post-procedure.
- Noticeable cosmetic efficacy was more consistently observed in properly selected subjects.
- 27 of 28 (96%) properly selected subjects (discrete fat bulges) had discernable efficacy.

Do I think this works?
Actually, yes. We've seen in certain types of reconstructive surgery (such as pressure sores) that the skin is much more resistant to damage than the underlying fat. Therefore, it makes sense that the chilling can destroy the fat but leave the skin viable. The before and after photos I've seen, however, have not been very impressive. 22.4% fat loss is pretty modest compared to what can be achieved with liposuction. For now, I consider it a modality with promise but limited effectiveness. It may be helpful for people who are not good candidates for liposuction.

For more on Zeltiq, click here for their website.

Thanks for reading.

Nap Time

It's days like this that I relish nap time, when Colden lays down and has his milk and I read him a story, then he snuggles up with his blanket and his favorite stuffed animal of the day, and I get a little bit of a breather. In the winter, it means curling up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and Moose; in the summer, it means curling up in my own bed or on the back porch with my laptop or my beads. Sometimes, it means crashing in bed for a much-needed nap after a long night of constant awakenings.

I'm going to start needing nap time even more, since last week, I found out that I am pregnant with our second child! Tom and I had talked about having another baby, and how nice it would be for Colden to have a sibling. But for a while, we thought it probably wasn't going to happen. What a nice surprise last weekend!

Of course, we've timed it all wrong again - my due date this time (until I'm told otherwise by the dating ultrasound in two weeks) is January 28. Another winter baby! Another terrified Tom, worried about having to get up to Plattsburgh in the snow and ice in case there's a storm.

And because I'm over 35, at my first appointment with the midwife last week, she absolutely put the fear of God into me over things like Down's Syndrome and Trisomy 18, and we get to go to Burlington to have a special ultrasound called an Ultrascreen to detect any abnormalities. But I've decided that I'm not going to worry about anything until someone tells me to worry - when Colden was still in utero, one of the ultrasounds detected a small cyst on the part of his brain that makes the spinal fluid. By the time of the re-check, however, the cyst had completely resolved itself and disappeared, and he's been a happy, healthy baby (and now a happy, healthy little boy!) ever since.

And since Colden has been asleep for forty five minutes now, I need to get busy and get some writing done so I can make a decent dinner tonight and then maybe try to get to bed at a decent hour!

One Way or Another on Skate Daily

Vans is teaming up with Color Magazine
to sponsor the One Way Or Another Tour.
SKATE DAILY's Derek Rinaldi has the scoop:

Color Magazine is proud to announce ‘One Way or Another’, a traveling exhibition of some of the most talented artists in the skateboard industry. With support from Vans shoes, on May 28 these artists will trade in their comfortable studios and desks for a snug ride in a van (generously provided by Volcom clothing) with over 100 pieces of art, a dozen skateboards and camping gear to embark on a classic skate-trip across part of America.

The one-night-only art shows, curated by Isaac McKay-Randozzi and Sandro Grison, will take place in Los Angeles at the Heavyweight Gallery, thenEscapist in Kansas City, MO and winding up at the No Comply Skate Shopin Austin, TX.

During the tour, the crew will be camping out, skating local spots and cavorting with each community on the most grass roots level. The premise of this group show serves to reconnect these artists with what got them where they are at in the first place: their skateboards.

Jenny McCarthy Salutes Literacy

This recurring series spotlights the Literacy ad series I ran while at Lerner Newspapers.

Since I had virtually no budget, no help and no support, when I was running the NIE program at Lerner Newspapers, I was allowed a bit of freedom (as long as ther
e was no cost attached). I started the NIE literacy ad series and I went after whatever celebrities I wanted. Sometimes the challenge of getting someone was half the fun.
I really didn't expect Jenny McCarthy to agree to appear in the series, but she did. On the other hand, I always was surprised with each new celebrity on board. Still, landing McCarthy was a nice boost for the ad series.
McCarthy had just come out with her book, Belly Laughs. We used the ad to promote her book, while she promoted literacy.

This was going to be the start of a great relationship with McCarthy's agent and PR firm. They liked the ad series and what we had to offer. We obviously liked the possibility of other celebrity-author appearances in our ad series.
Unfortunately, this was one of the last ads I ever ran at Lerner. Once the evil empire (aka Pioneer Press) took over, they weren't too excited about anything done under the old management.
It was really hard for me to take. As much as I joke, I worked hard to make our NIE program a success. Just when it really started to get recognized and show results, it was ended.
It was almost 6 years ago and it still saddens me. I must not look at the negative side though. I had a lot of fun, worked with a lot of celebs and did a lot of good for students in our area.

Learning to read is well worth the effort--it's fun and can lead to great success in life.
--Jenny McCarthy as quoted in the NIE ad series in 2005

IMPRESSION NAIL ART AND MORE

I'm going through a phase again this time it is with young nails impression tools. If you think these nails are wild and crazy you should meet this client of mine! LOL

This is one of the newest glitters from sparklesnailproducts.com. I added the white star using an impression nail stick from youngnails.com. Everything I have purchased from young nails has been amazing and has really made my job so much easier! Thank you Young Nails!

All of the dots (except for the black polish dots) in this design are done with acrylic. I used golden halo from sparklesnailproducts.com as the base color.

Super fun confetti nails. I mixed this confetti with clear acrylic. I just love when it's so easy to do something that turns out so cute.

This is opi gel nail polish in louvre me louvre me not. The white star is a sticker that changes colors in the sun!

I used 3 different colors of purple on these nails and added some moody confetti from young nails. I added some silver and black polish to really give them that extra edge! I loooove these!

A classic black and silver design.

I'm loving this bright yellow. It's from the neon glitter collection at artglitter.com.

The color of these nails is blue and yellow but my camera just doesn't like to photograph the lighter colors as well. I'm sure it's probably the photographers fault.

The rule when I do nails is if you don't decide on a design or color then chances are you'll probably get purple! I embedded all sorts of different things in these nails and also used an impression tool from young nails to make a star on a few of the nails.

Getting Carried Away

I'll admit it...I'm a HUGE Sex and the City fan. Love every fashion-filled, cosmopolitan-sipping moment of it. (especially those moments that include Aidan, AKA John Corbett... *drool* <---been dreamy since Northern Exposure) I would kill for Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe and shoe collection (mostly the shoe collection- I'm a big shoe collector in addition to my nail polish ;)) Anyway, my roommate and I, along with a few other girls, are going to see Sex and the City 2 tonight, I'm super excited!!! I'm curious to see what happens with the Aidan bump-into. (hell, I'd pay the $12 just to stare at him on screen for 2 hrs). The ring finger nail in today's design is way over the top (hence the 'Carried Away' tie-in in the title). Hope you like them! :) Sorry they're a tad shaky though, I was shaking so badly while I was doing them that it was impossible to draw straight lines!! Also, check The Daily Nail: REVIEWS later tonight for a review of the ULTA Glam Goth collection! :)

I used American Apparel Hassid as a base for the black nails, and Zoya Trixie for the jeweled nail. For the pink of the skyline, and logo, I used Massini Power Pack (an inexpensive brand that midwesterners can find at Meijer, but I'm not sure where else to purchase it), and the rhinestones were from Michaels Crafts. :) Topped it all off with some Seche Vite top coat, and away I go. :)

Who's your favorite SATC character- male or female?

Aidan....*sigh*

American Idol Season Finale: So Long, Simon!

Last night's American Idol finale was bitter sweet as we said hello to a new star and goodbye to our old friend Simon. (His wise-cracks and snooty 'tude were the only reasons I watched the show!
