Camel Whoa

Today, I managed to snag my major nail polish lemmings- China Glaze Classic Camel and China Glaze Ingrid! :) (I decided to grab Swing Baby as well. I love the Vintage Vixen collection!! Today in Vegas it feels disgusting. I know that I shouldn't complain, but after living in the desert for 2.5 years, 41% humidity is HELL. (on top of the 100°+ temperatures. It makes me think of the days in Michigan where you step out of the shower, and then feel like you have to shower all over again. Humidity is the devil, and the devil is in Las Vegas. I did another relatively simple design today, since a few people expressed that they dug the simpler stuff. I think it sort of has a vintage feel to it as well, so I think it fits with the color collection I used. :) BTW Class Camel was so totally worth the wait. I am in love with this polish, even though it looks horrid with my skin. :-P

I used China Glaze Classic Camel as a base, China Glaze Ingrid for the scrolls, China Glaze Swing Baby for the dots. Topped it off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

"Nup / Tuck" - Chelsea Clinton's Pre-Wedding Plastic Surgery?

There's quite a bit of speculation that Chelsea Clinton may have undergone a "Nup / Tuck," aka pre-wedding plastic surgery. She certainly has never looked better. A friend of mine, Dr. Jennifer Walden, has commented to The Examiner that she believes Chelsea underwent a rhinoplasty and chin augmentation. After looking at photos, I would agree with her, although it can be difficult to separate what changes may be due to plastic surgery versus natural maturation.

In addition, Chelsea's gummy smile appears to be improved, which can be due to a surgical gummy smile repair (where the muscles that elevate the lip are cut) or Botox injections to paralyze these same muscles.

Either way, Chelsea looks great, and I hope her big day was a terrific one for her. I remember my wedding day vividly. Best day of my life!

Q&A :

Q: Would you have us refer to the being in the story as 'Beholder' Or might we call it whatever we please (such as a name or otherwise)? I ask only to know whether the term is important to you or the sculpture's appearances.

A : It doesn't have to be called the beholder . I call it a beholder because of it's appearance in a modern world . In a steampunk world it could have a different name or none . The sculpture appearance is important to me .

Q : Do you have a relative size for the robot that we should stick to?

A : There is no size limit to how big you can imagine the creature to be.
I always imagined the creature to be about 2 times larger than a human .
Here's one of my favorite beholder illustrations : http://www.candlekeep.com/images/gallery/beholder.jpg

Q : Is there a set origin of the Beholder?

A : The Beholder doesn't have a set origin , the writers have the freedom to develop their own twist. I had too many ideas for it's origin but i never can make my mind . I'm looking forward to see different versions .

Seasons in the Sun

When I first started playing on the Dogs softball team, Steve Stumpf was the shortstop. Since then, I have seen him play everywhere, except for centerfield and pitcher. I have also seen him 'inside-out' a pitch to right field about 500 times. He is a master at that.
Some say that Steve has lost a step since those days some 17 years ago. I don't think he's lost any speed, primarily because he never had any speed! Still, he is a very good base runner (even if it takes him a while to run them).
Earlier this season, according to the soft pencil in the official scorebook, Steve hit a home run. The fans who were there tell a slightly different story. Steve hit a nice shot (to right field, naturally). For some reason, he attempted to stretch his double into a triple. The throw went wide and Steve "raced" for home.
I don't think Steve even wanted to leave third base though, but he had no choice. Our team was waving him in. Steve chugged around third and 'sprinted' towards home as the third baseman picked up the errant throw and sent it sailing to the catcher. Fortunately for Steve, the throw hit him in the leg and rolled away harmlessly. Steve scored easily (although not effortlessly).
Below is Steve's take on the whole matter. It is also what a man in his mid-40's looks like after just chugging around the bases!

Retro Zig Zaggin'

Today's nail design was quick, I'll admit it, I'm in a rush today- lots to do- Colin Hay concert tonight! woo! The design was inspired by the paint job I saw on the side of a building in southern California, I just thought that it had a really retro vibe to it, which, of course, I love. I also got to use a new polish I picked up from Milani- they have a new collection of nudes out now!! :)

I used Milani Teddy Bare (which is pretty close to Essie Mink Muffs) as a base, with American Apparel Cotton for the ivory line, and Zoya Jancyn for the orange line.

Sorry for the lack of complexity today, I feel kinda guilty when I don't do crazy stuff. :-P

Open Hours & Events

On the Beat with Paula Faris

My friend Chuck is fond of saying "We're all professional." It can be used in many situations and Chuck uses it wisely. It is sort of his way (and now mine, since I have begun using it, too) of saying that we belong (wherever we are). Of course, Chuck doesn't announce it to the world, although occasionally he has tossed it into the small talk of an interview.
Now, with several years under our belts, we really do belong and really are all professional. We've been on many major league fields and in many clubhouses. We even took part in a pre-game interview session with Ron Gardenhire and the beat writers in Gardenhire's office at Target Field.
Last week while at Wrigley, I saw NBC's Paula Faris interviewing Randy Wells of the Chicago Cubs. Okay, yes we are all professional, but Global Traveler and I don't quite carry the weight that NBC does. I was not able to interview Wells. I did not walk away empty-handed though. I jumped at the opportunity to interview the interviewer, Paula Faris. Paula talked about her favorite vacation spots and traveling with the Cubs for the playoffs (which unfortunately won't happen this year).
I was very happy to be able to talk to Paula. She does a great job for Chicago's NBC5 sports news team. She is a multi-time Emmy winner, including one for her coverage of the Chicago Marathon.
I also really appreciate Paula giving a few moments of her time. She was busy doing her own job, including getting coverage of the Alan Trammel on-field session.
Unfortunately, the camera work was not the best effort. The sun was so bright, I couldn't even see Paula through the viewfinder. I was further hampered by the zoom, which was stuck. Still, it did not deter me. Sometimes things happen and cause challenges. Sometimes the conditions are not the best. The key is to muddle through it. After all, we are all professional!

Grease is the Word

Lately, Paramount decided to re-release the movie GREASE in select theaters, but this time with a little twist- it's a SING-A-LONG! They added graphics throughout the movie when there were songs to be sung, and how they handled some of the lyrics was pretty damn amusing. The graphics were amusing, but some were distracting and too much. All in all it was a fun experience. In honor of the re-release, I did GREASE nails!! :-D

I used:

Thumb:

American Apparel Hassid as a base, with Sally Hansen Professional Lavender Cloud as a base for the red, and for the letters in 'GREASE', with Nubar Sexy Red for the red of the car.

Index:

Sally Hansen Professional Lavender Cloud as a base with Nubar Sexy Red for the Rydell High logo.

Middle:

American Apparel Hassid as a base, with Sally Hansen Professional Lavender Cloud for the T Birds logo.

Ring:

Yachty Yachty Yadda as a base, with American Apparel Hassid for the words.

Pinky:

Sally Hansen Professional Lavender Cloud as a base, with Nubar Sexy Red for the lightning outline, and China Glaze OMG for the silver.

Topped everything off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

We go together like rama lama lama ke ding a de dinga a dong, just thought you should know.

An Idea for a New Project!

I had about ten minutes of free time today, and in that ten minutes, I managed to come up with enough new beading project ideas to keep me busy for, oh, the next six months.

These little ceramic faces were made by Diane Briegleb, and they are leftover from a wholesale order of them that I placed years ago when I was part-owner of a bead shop and fine craft gallery. They have been sitting in a little plastic drawer for the last five years, waiting for me to fish one out now and then and use it for something. Well.

Like I said a few weeks ago, I've been reading a ton of books about British history lately. And I'm reading some new books about British history and important figures in British history. Today, I got to thinking about the six wives of King Henry the VIII, and the whole annulled/beheaded pattern that arose from his quest for a male heir. Ironically, his second daughter became one of the most influential leaders in human history, while his sole male heir, King Edward VI, only ruled for about six and a half years.

So while I was thinking about these six women and their lives, and then I started thinking about some of the other great queens in British history - namely, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth I, the aforementioned daughter of Henry VIII - and I thought how I would love to do beaded "portraits" of them using these ceramic faces.

I went and sat down with my little drawer full of ceramic faces, and then I wrote down a list of names on a couple of pieces of paper. I looked up some official portraits of the women online and then went back to my ceramic faces and found the faces that I felt connected with the names and the portraits. (The internet can be a wonderful thing!)

Now my challenge is to actually find the beads and stitch each one of these faces into a beaded portrait of one of the queens of England. I'm giving myself a deadline for each one - I want to complete one beaded portrait per month.

I know who to start with, too - Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII. The woman who was first married to King Henry, who believed she was still his rightful wife until the day she died after a 24-year marriage. She carried six children, but only one lived to adulthood. She was, many believed, unjustly ousted as queen because Henry VIII wanted to marry Anne Boelyn, who had been one of her ladies-in-waiting.

The ceramic face that I thought would be perfect to portray Catherine was one that I had glued to a piece of Stiff Stuff a long time ago with no particular project in mind. She looks almost virginal, and indeed, there are portraits of Catherine depicting her as the Virgin Mary as well as Mary Magdalene.

What's going to drive me nuts now is that I will have absolutely no time to start on her until maybe Sunday at the farmers' market. Monday at the latest. I've already got the Delica beads picked out to start stitching a bezel around her...

WATERCOLOR BATIK - SHAKER VILLAGE HOUSE

I think this watercolor batik looks very much as it looked inside my head!!!  (LOL)
I'm happy with the shadows on the side of the house.  The grass could use some work, but overall it looks OK to me.

Steve Renko Chooses White Sox?

Steve Renko was the quarterback for Kansas while Gale Sayers played there. Renko was drafted by the Oakland Raiders, but he had already been drafted by the New York Mets and chose to start a baseball career.
Renko never pitched for the Mets. He was traded to the Montreal Expos where he pitched for several seasons. Then he became a bit of a journeyman, pitching for the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago White Sox, the Oakland A's, the Boston Red Sox, the California Angels and the Kansas City Royals. If you don't stay with one team your entire career, I always thought it would be cool to pitch for a bunch, especially all over he country, like Renko did.
I didn't have a lot of time to talk to Renko when I met him. The crowd of people to meet him was unbelievable. Even he was shocked at the masses.
I wanted to talk to him about his time at Kansas. I also wanted to talk about his being one of a few pitchers with more than 125 wins and a record below .500 (134-146). Instead, I was only able to briefly talk about his fine hitting (a .215 career average).
Renko did make a point of saying that the Sox hat he wore was not indicative to him choosing the Sox over the Cubs. Apparently he did not realize the slight controversy that would cause.

We're Gonna Rouge Our Knees

and roll our stockings down...

I have yet to come across a musical that I DIDN'T like, and CHICAGO is no exception. I LOVE this musical. I love the movie version, and though I've only experienced the soundtrack of the stage version, I adore that too! I love the glamour of it all, the sex, the crime, the Richard Gere?! :-P Anyway, today's nails were inspired by all that jazz...

The 'glow' is far more subtle in person, but the camera really seemed to pick it up.

I used American Apparel Hassid as a base, with the orangey red from the Color Club Yacht Club collection for the glow of the neon letters, mixed with a little American Apparel Hassid to try to fade out the glow a bit, and with Sally Hansen Professional Lavender Cloud to create the glowing neon of the middle C. For the black of the other letters, I used American Apparel Hassid.

So who's your favorite Velma? Bebe Neuwirth? Catherine Zeta Jones? Someone else? Are you more of a Roxie Hart fan? Maybe Mama? Billy? *rawr*

Artfest!

Artfest classes will be live on Site this Sat nite at Midnight! Go for a look, you're in for a treat! I am so thrilled and excited to be teaching "Journal Babies". It will be a totally fun class for beginners and advanced artists alike. We will be journaling and painting on three feet linoleum shaped as our journal baby.  There will also be a little exploration of the Poloroid Pogo Printer to add images to our journal baby. I hope to see you there. There are so many fabulous teachers, I hope you can come!!!

Here is what Teesha Moore (The main host of Artfest) said today on yahoo groups.
"OH MY GOODNESS!!!  Tiphoni, my web guru (and daughter) just sent me the link to the artfest classes (we have the teachers double check everything before the big reveal).  and let me tell you...IT IS FANTASTIC this year!!!  This is one of those moments I well up with pride....OK I said it...I am DARN proud of Artfest!  The teachers go way above and beyond, Tiffany goes above and beyond to convey the coolness of each class, and the universe sprinkles some kind of magic dust over everything to make it all twinkly and sparkly.

I'm telling you...hold onto your hats...it's gonna be a tough decision this year picking just 3.

OK...midnight next saturday is when it goes live."

Am I Myself Again? Please?

So, thanks to precipitously dropping hormone levels, I've been feeling almost like myself again since yesterday. My doctor appointment on Monday was uneventful - she said that she thought the drugs did their thing, and that I could go on my way. I still need to go get one more blood test, which I'll do on Friday while I'm running errands in Plattsburgh.

Today, I'm going to see the acupuncturist in Lake Placid to see if she can help me. I don't know why I didn't think of it until someone on Facebook mentioned it to me - I was like, d-oh! I should have called her first! I spoke to her yesterday when I made the appointment, and she has a treatment plan for me already and she has a tonic that will help me, too. After those horrific side effects from the methergine, I am really looking forward to this session of acupuncture.

On a lighter note, my friend Carol Dean Sharpe of Sand Fibers has had her 1,500th sale on Etsy! It's not that amazing when you check out her Etsy shop - her peyote stitch patterns are totally addicting. Any time I need a little "fix", I buy some of her patterns and raid my stash of Delicas to whip up a few new cuffs for myself.

Carol is having a giveaway on her blog - all you have to do is leave a comment and you're entered to win the gorgeous lariat that she has posted on the blog! Earlier this year, Carol and I did a trade for a couple of our beadwoven and bead embroidered necklaces - and her work is absolutely incredible. The piece I traded for with her is one of my all-time favorite pieces of jewelry, and I get so many compliments on it! Yes, I'll post some pictures of it here as soon as I find them - it's an amazing piece.

I don't want to jinx myself, but I think this Sunday is going to be my first farmers' market of the season. Since I'm feeling back to myself, and since we really need the income, I'll be setting up at the Keene Valley farmers' market this Sunday from 9:30 until 2. I'll have my line of bead embroidered necklaces, pendants and cuff bracelets available, along with a couple of special close-outs from my other lines of jewelry that I was selling in years past. And every purchase made will get a free piece of dichroic glass jewelry! (Same goes if you make a purchase in my Etsy shop - buy anything and get a free piece of dichroic glass jewelry from my remaining stock!)

Tomorrow I teach a class in African beadweaving for a group of kids at the JEMS theater in Jay, right down the road from my house! I'm very excited - I missed teaching last week because of all the nonsense going on with my uterus, but I'll be teaching the next two Thursdays. This Thursday is African beadweaving and next week is basic jewelry making. I'm very excited - I love working with kids and I love teaching, so this should be great. I just have a ton of things to pull together before tomorrow afternoon, so off I go!

Autograph Tales:Kevin Fagan

Kevin Fagan is the creative genius behind the Drabble comic strip. Fagan became the youngest syndicated cartoonist ever when at 22, his Drabble went nationwide
I sent a note to Fagan asking him for an autograph. He sent back a signed index card with a sketch of Norman Drabble, the main character of his strip.
In the autograph world, this is about as cool as it gets. It's almost like signed game-used equipment in sports.
An index card signed by Kevin Fagan-early 1990's.

Atomic Wedgwood

I've always been a fan of all things retro in the art world, and the plates that today's nail art was inspired by are no exception! I love the atomic era art style, so when my friend Chris showed me his plates and suggested they'd make great nail art, I completely agreed. So, I palmed a plate, and headed to my nail art desk, and got to work!

The inspiration:

The Nails:

I used Sally Hansen Professional Lavender Cloud as a base, with a mixture of Essie Mink Muffs and American Apparel California Trooper for the beige, Orly Gumdrop for the turquoise, Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Spring Green for the green, and MAC Showy for the dark brown line work. Topped everything off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Dotty Purple

This was supposed to be purple with a yellow diamond pattern, per a Twitter poll last night. Needless to say, the diamond pattern didn't work out so well, as you'll see later. But I think the dotted design turned out pretty well.

I started with two coats Urban Decay "Meltdown", a deep, shimmery royal purple.
Then I got out the 3-D Nail Art Pen in Yellow that Nail Art Delights was kind enough to send me free with my last order. I thought it looked like fun.
I used the pen to create a lattice/diamond pattern on my left hand...but I had a hard time controlling both the flow and the application. The paint was very thick, and I think it may be acrylic rather than nail polish. I think you'll agree it didn't turn out well.
Yeah. Needless to say, I grabbed the polish remover and started over. Once I got back to the "purple" stage, I took a bottle of Zoya "Creamy" and my handy dotting tool, and started playing with dots. I tried to make a diamond lattice design, but it jumbled together.
I decided just dotted stripes would be fine, and finished off my nails with those.
Two coats Seche Vite and some cleanup...and voila, dotty purple nails.
This flash photo is true to the actual colors. The photo at the very top is without a flash, and looks a little more blue than it should.

Next week, something gold or green, I think. Until then, happy polishing!

Kim Kardashian and Celeb Lookalike Surgery

Kim Kardashian recently stepped into the Celeb Lookalike Surgery arena, by conducting a mini-Twittervention for a fan who was planning to have buttock surgery to look like Kim: "Don't try 2 b someone else," and implored her not to "change yourself for anybody but yourself." Today Madison Park of CNN.com published an article that expanded on the phenomenon of people trying to undergo plastic surgery to look like a celeb. Click here for the article, which includes some of my thoughts on the subject.

This story is similar to the one with Jessica Alba, as documented in my blog post here, where she convinced a fan in China not to undergo surgery to look like Jessica.

Check out my thoughts in the CNN.com article, but in addition to that, here are some more:

1. I think it's very normal to admire and wish to have similar body parts of certain stars (I would kill, maim, and steal for The Situation's Abs) but when this takes the next step to wanting to look exactly like another person, that signals a potential major psychological problem.

2. Good for Kim that she would take time out of her day to help out a fan.

3. I hate how Twitter and texting are making people forget how to write (try 2 b??!!). I especially HATE that Pussycat Dolls' song, "Stick Wit U." Argh!

WATERCOLOR BATIK - CORN

A few weeks ago I did some watercolor batiks again.  I don't do it too often since it's a messy process - but it is fun.
Even though you have planned it out, you never really know what you have until the wax is off and you see it clearly for the first time.  A friend says it's like opening a Christmas package - and discovering what's inside!
This is w/c 1/4 sheet size.

Guest Book Covers

In May, JayHawk Evans, Cuzz Gekas and I trekked to Novi (MI) for the Motor City Comic Con. We also saw the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox in extra innings. Before the game, we got to meet Willie Horton, a former star with the Tigers.
I am always excited about meeting former players, but Cuzz was especially happy. Cuzz has been a lifelong fan of the Tigers. The 1968 World Series is one of his favorite sports moments.
Before the game, Horton was selling and signing his book, Willie Horton:The People's Champion. We could not miss this opportunity.
After reading the book, Cuzz offered to provide Johngy's Beat with his thoughts. I gladly accepted his offer.
Willie Horton was the Detroit Tigers left fielder on their 1968 World Championship team. As a Tigers fan, I can vividly remember following that team as they beat the favored St. Louis Cardinals and Bob Gibson four games to three in the Fall Classic. Horton was a feared slugger who hit 325 career homeruns in a pitcher-friendly era and was a four time All-Star. While I knew much of Horton's on field accomplishments, his autobiography, Willie Horton:The People's Champion, offered great insight into the man both personally and professionally.
Horton was raised in Detroit and starred at Northwestern High School before signing with the Tigers in 1961. As a result, he always had a strong attachment to the city. While a player in 1967, he attempted to quell the race riots that ravaged much of Detroit and made efforts to promote racial harmony in the city. Most impressive are his tireless charitable efforts, much of it for the benefit of youth organizations, community groups and public schools in Detroit. Horton also was the consummate teammate and to this day remains close friends with many former Tigers such as Hall of Famer Al Kaline (who wrote the forward for the book), Mickey Stanley and Gates Brown.
The book is a great read tha
t follows Horton's playing career and his life after baseball in great detail. It is well-written (with respected journalist Kevin Allen) and after reading he book, I became an even bigger fan of Willie Horton.

Just Push Play

So, since I've been feeling pretty under the weather for the last few days, I've become very acquainted with the TV remote. I seem to have caught some sort of bug. *bleck* Anyway. There are a few things I make myself get out of bed/get off the couch for- and this is one!! :) (Groceries is another) Anyway, today's nails were inspired by my buddy, the remote, the clicker, the changer, your children, whatever you call the little thing that allows you to channel surf. :-P

I used American Apparel Factory Grey as a base with American Apparel Cotton for the symbols. For the red of the record 'button', I used Nubar Sexy Red. Topped it all off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Did you know the Travel Channel has wicked awesome shows? I'm totally addicted. between that, Discovery, History, and ID, I'm totally hypnotized. In addition, can I say I am loving Anthony Bourdain?

New journal pages

I had time to work in my journal again. This journal will be the one I use for my collab with Syd (See previous post). I have 4 pages done at this point and will send it on to her to work in when she is ready.

I also created another art piece today following my bird theme for Etsy, look for it very soon. I hope to list it tonite or tomorrow.
