kick the can

A study using aluminum discs
Bent discs
As a child we played lots of kick the can
The cans were very much dented when we were finished with them.
I also loved then and now
charm bracelets.
Red is one of my 10,000 favorite colors
I've always loved sparkly things.
This piece works for me.

This month's Art Spark Challenge
not exactly a beady story...

I guess this challenge was a tough one.  Every day when I'm at my teaching job, my friend Cathy and I walk during our lunch.  I told her about this challenge, and my reasoning behind it.  I won't go into my life story, but after experiencing a very unfortunate time for my children and me, I was able to turn that around. One part of that journey was when I was asked by my sister, Colleen Carroll, a published author to write a dating violence curriculum for New Jersey Battered Women's Services
in Morristown, NJ.  I always believe that things happen for reasons and this could not have come at a better time.  I was not only fortunate enough to be able to reflect and write about my own young life as a teenager, but I was able to use what I know today to, hopefully, help young people understand when they are in relationships involving abuse.

Anyhow, I went on to teach workshops on the topic to adults (mostly teachers).  During my opening, I asked that each person (women) write something that they had accomplished and were proud of.  I told them that we would go around the room and share what that was.  What I realized the first time I tried this opener, was that it seemed very difficult for almost every single woman in the room to complete that task. Most responses were really about something that they were proud of regarding someone else...

Of course, like everything else that puzzles me, I reflected on why that might be.  I thought back to going to my own weekly therapy sessions and being asked, "When is the earliest time that you can remember that what other people had to say about you really didn't matter enough to stick?"  I thought at the time that maybe it was around the age of ten.

I'm a middle school resource teacher which simply means that I teach "typical" children in small groups who benefit from different methods of learning material.  They typically come to see me one period a day.  Sometimes, I go into the classrooms as well.  Since they are in small groups and I always have them for at least two years, I get to know them at a personal level.  I can assure you that the time that what others have to say definitely starts at the end of 6th grade and intensifies in 7th grade.  At that time, so many of us start to define who we are by what everyone else says we are.

Here is an example:

Little Susie comes to school proudly adorned with her new hair cut and outfit.  She walks down the hall looking and feeling great.  She meets up with some "friends" and no one comments.  She goes to morning classes....  a few whispers are exchanged and then it is time for lunch. Time passes and then someone says to Susie, "Why did you get your hair cut so short?  It makes you look like a boy.  I would never have come to school looking like that...especially with that shirt on!!!"

OUCH!!!

I'm not saying this is true for absolutely everyone, but it is for many.  And for many, those little "stings" continue.

As Cathy and I talked while walking around the track, she thought perhaps the reason that people have a hard time talking about their successes is modesty....

Perhaps?  Perhaps, it is more than that.

We still have one more week to enter this challenge and I hope that you can think back to those times when life was not as complicated.

Pick out just one.....one little snippet of your life, whether it was home, in school, etc. that you were proud.

Maybe it was that morning before you headed out to school with your new hair cut and brand new outfit.......

Thanks for reading.....

Steampunk Rings with Watch Movement

Steampunk Rings with Watch Movement

I recently received a special request from a customer to make steampunk rings with watch movement from a ring they bought somewhere else . For a long time i did'nt want to make any because I'm convinced that i can make steampunk jewelry without having to always put gears and clockwork in them . There's many other characteristics found in the Aesthetics of Steampunk .

I see a lot of steampunk jewelry that are simply made from mass produced adjustable ring base with glued watch movement . I agree that it does look good but those adjustable ring base are far from comfortable . Also nothing of it is handmade by the person who glue them .

So i decided to mix the idea of having a watch movement attached to my own Original design.
The band are made by hand using wire that i solidly shape into a comfortable ring .
The rings are not adjustable but i can make custom size on request , just send me a convo on Etsy and i will make a similar ring for you .

Do you prefer Steampunk Jewelry with or without watch movement ?

200 years later : Daniel Proulx find himself lost the future he discover his old laboratory destroyed , in ruins with graffiti . Escaping from his parallel past existence on the brinks of apocalypse , he appears in our time , he searches for his creations that traveled with him during his time travel experiment and some that were stolen by an other rival time traveler .

Not part of the video , The main character finds an old TV in a back alley . Using one of his mechanical device , he modify the TV . He use the TV as tool to communicate with his plane of reality hoping to reach an old friend who could help him return to his time . During the video we see the Main Character speaking Through the receiver / porthole .

Has he walks the streets , no-one seems to be able to see him because he his not supposed to be there . By defying the laws of physics he arrives in a different plane of existence where people have no knowledge of his parallel reality. He is intangible to those without the means to see him .

Discovered Steampunk Artist : Diarment from Barcelona

Discovered Steampunk Artist : Diarment from Barcelona

I see a lot of steampunk Artist . Recently i stumbled on one that i have first met on DeviantArt .
I often look on ETSY to see what new steampunk stuff comes out and i was very happy to come across what i had previously seen on DeviantArt . So i purchase one of the clock . What i especially like is the aestestic that make this functional piece of art look like it is powered by some ancient mysterious technology .

Tell us a bit about yourself name, location, affiliations, personal stuff?
My name is Rafa Maya, I'm known as diarment on ETSY and DeviantArt. I am a multidisciplinary artist, based in Barcelona (Spain).

My artistic career began with drawing and painting, activities that i will not give up; but my ideas and projects will be expanded soon by computers, music, photography, modeling techniques and all that is close at hands .

Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc ?
First, I am influenced by things I see and feel: movies, pictures, events, etc.. the idea is taking root in my mind, once I vocetos, then gather parts, recycle , model with putty and cardboard, then it all comes together and add the magic of painting, the work comes to an end.

How did you first become interested in the Steampunk Culture and - Why do you like it ?
I've always been fascinated by the making of machinery, especially those that seems somewhat useless or actually fantastic and impossible , it is one of the qualities that I find interesting to Steampunk world, along with the imaginative freedom from ancient technologies , and try to translate those impressions in my works, some on canvas, sculpture, cardboard and scissors, and others with computers .

What is your favourite piece of work by yourself ?
The favorite piece is always the last in which I work.

Also accept orders for a living, portrait, cartoons and design in general.

Name one of your favorite steampunk artist ?
I could name many artists (most of them are on deviantart) but I will appoint one, which is not anything long, his name is Oscar Chichoni, an illustrator with qualities very steampunk.

What are your goal , project , plans for the future ?
My plans for today, tomorrow could change at any time and are uncertain.

What advice would you give new artists?
I'm not locked in a very defined aesthetic, a style such as Steampunk has to offer a wide range of possibilities .

2009 New Steampunk Jewelry design

This year CatherinetteRings decided to turn the steam on to a different level and create new original Steampunk Jewelry designs .

First i introduced changes into my steampunk ring designs - A new line : ARTIFACT .
ARTIFACT STEAMED are modified with clock parts and gears . These rings are one of a kind . Upon request i can remake similar one . Due to the complexity of the design i cant reproduce exactly the same ring twice so they will be all unique.

THE RINGS

ARTIFACT STEAMED with Clock Parts inlay into Mysterious Amber :
In this ring i drilled by hand tiny holes in amber and inlay minuscule clock gears.
To give you an idea of the dimension : the bead in the center is 8mm and the gears are between 1mm-1.5mm

ARTIFACT STEAMED with Crab fire Agate and clock part .
In this ring i also used Copper & Brass wire .

Our Banners tells a story

From when we started almost a year ago , we didn't have any Steampunk Jewelry in our Etsy shop . At that time All the jewelry was made by Catherine , i was only taking pictures , creating the listings , customer service & post office . One thing that has not changed , Catherine is always making all the banners for our shop , lucky me she is a professional fashion graphic designer . She is so good at her work that she recently been promoted to Artistic Director . Our shop has changed a lot when i started to make jewelry . So here's our banners from the very first one up till the most current .

Exclusive blog previews : Steampunk Phantom Quartz Bracelet

Recently quartz has been my favorite mineral . I had Smoky quartz,Black rutilated , golden rutilated ,coppery rutilated and Multi rutilated quartz . Now i have received a new specimen called phantom quartz . I received some mineral color Phantom quartz :

First i had no idea what i would do with it but everything falls into places as i just follow the shapes of the stones with wire .

I have used Tinned Copper wire to match with the earthy nature of the quartz.

I will make a ring and pendant to match with this bracelet as a set , maybe some earrings too.

These are the 2 pendant i received .
