I realize that I haven't done an art related post in awhile so I wanted to focus on something that's been in the news recently... the cancellation of the Secrets of the Silk Road exhibition.
This exhibition was featuring the most amazingly preserved mummies ever found, as well as rare artifacts never before seen in the West (Penn Museum). The exhibition was a tale of long-forgotten cultures along the world’s most legendary trading route. More than 150 objects were supposed to be on view, including gold jewelry and perfectly preserved food!
The Secrets of the Silk Road was supposed to open in Philadelphia at the Penn Museum this past weekend, but was cancelled last minute by officials from China. No one knows why or what exactly happened and according to the Penn Museum's website: "Secrets of the Silk Road exhibition, scheduled for February 5 - June 5, 2011, has been modified, and will open without artifacts and mummies from China. The rich, multimedia Silk Road gallery experience—featuring text, images, sound, maps, a recreated excavation site, and interactive stations—will now be free with regular Museum admission."
I really wonder what happened! This was supposed to be an incredible traveling exhibition and I was really looking forward to seeing it. Here are some photos from the exhibition:
